rob190364 2,594
Ball ache of a session yesterday.....checked first two warrens that normally hold a few, nothing in either. Positive mark on a two holer, I've ferreted this one loads of times and even though it's only two holes it's like a big circle, so if you put one ferret down the rabbit(s) tend to give it the run around, if you enter two they trap the rabbits in the middle and you end up with a dig. So I put one of my jills down and settle down for a brew, sure enough she gets the run around for a good 20 minutes plus but sticks to it and in the end I bag a nice buck. On to the next warrens, I ended up ferreting three warrens of about 7 or 8 holes and both were the same, basically just jills chasing squeakers round the warrens for ages, one of them must have been about 45 minutes or more, and the little sods were hole hopping and just running straight through the nets. Annoyingly the ferrets kept catching them though, but not sticking because there were so many running round. Finally get the ferrets out, both now have full stomachs and acting very sleepy. Decide to head back but get a mark on another two holer, can't resist sticking one of the ferrets down but with no nets, ferret gone for ages, check where she is and the 8ft collar is out of range, bugger! Comes out half an hour later with blood on here face. Decide to head home, another positive mark on yet another two holer and once again I can't resist, in goes another jill, 5 minutes later a squeaker pops out, dog goes for it, flies back in head on into the jill.....FFS!!!! On the way back to the car get another positive mark on a 6 holer, enter both jills, major run around yet again. There just didn't seem to be any adult rabbits anywhere, just tons of warrens full of young uns. By the time I got back to the car both ferrets were absolutely cabbaged, I don't think they've ever run around that much in their lives!! So ferreting is probably done now for this year, good exercise for the ferrets but I came away feeling like I've put an unnecessary dent in next years sport, I've no idea how many young ones they killed but I bet it was quite a few. So I'll just have a few lamping and mooching sessions for the next couple of weeks and then it's out with the fishing rods I think. I was hoping for a few more ferreting sessions but it ain't going to happen Quote Link to post
