Training to Whistle

Recommended Posts

Has anyone got any information on training to whistle, the very basics.

I've read alot about it online and i do fancy trying it with my pup (springer x cocker) but i cant find anything on the very basics.

How do you start off?

Call the "come" or "here" command and then blow the whistle at same time? Praise, and get to the point where hes coming to just the whistle?

Then what about stop, sit, turn around etc.

Do you use different tones? More blows?

1 blow - stop

2 blows - sit

3 blows - recall

etc?

Any basic info appreciated to start me off while i look for a decent book.

Thanks

hi friend get the pup used to the whistle from day one (this is for spaniels it might be different for labs or hpr,s) one short pip stop and sit do this every time you have him on the lead walking , eventually he will associate the two pip and sit, but hes only a pup so don't be in a hurry ,

two pips you use this to turn the dog ,

four pips recall , use it every time you feed him , or praise him he,ll soon put the two together whistle means good , like any training you get good days and bad days good luck .

use the whislte pips how ever you want lol

we use one short pip ,stop , 2 pips come in , one long pip high to low tone for sit .. continuous pipping to keep beating (when in heavy cover)

father in law as trained many working dogs and trained a few field trial winners and working trial winners..using the above

when you work out what pips do what stick to it or you will just confuse the dog ..

pm your email and i'll send you a training manual i have as a pdf for you to read over (bought it off ebay before i knew the father in law lol)

just to add i dont think he ever used the whisstle to turn the dog , he just used hand signals , i must ask lol
