Taz - deerhound X

This is my sapling Taz. He's deerhound/grey/bit(s) of something else. He was a rescue at six months, but I got to him before the Rescue cut his bits off. He's 26 and a half inches at the shoulder.

He's now two years and two months, as far as I can tell. He's not stockbroken, but not interested in sheep, except when they run. That and his recall are what I'm working him on at the moment.

 

You can see from his head that he's still very much a young dog, but muscling up nicely. He's got a high prey drive, and will go for rabbits and squirrels where he can. His third or fourth bunny was caught while he was on the lead in undergrowth - nice healthy sitter. Just after this pic was taken this morning I let him off in a wood which backs on to our fishing club lake and a chalet park. I checked the fieds around beforehand - no stock.

He got a scent of something - fox probably, and I didn't see him back for ten minutes - bu**er wouldn't come in to the whistle at all. Eventually he came back to where I'd let him off.

 

This is my first proper lurcher. My other dog Lily is a staffie/whippet X. Fast in straight lines, but poor at turning. Good with rats though.

 

I'm looking forward to training Taz and doing some rabbiting with him. I've done a bit of ferreting in the past, and I shoot rabbits, and watch them if they are out of range, so between us, once he grows on a bit, we should do alright.

Good luck with him, mate ! You'll both learn as you go along; nothing better than getting out with the dog and learning from your mistakes !
