wastage: when and how

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

When breeding a litter of your own, when and how do you decide which you keep?

At what age?

Which rules do you apply etc etc?

Cheers

you will eventually always favour a couple over the rest. the longer you can keep them the better you will know, you can cut down the ones you dont want quite quickly, dog or bitch, colour ect

So you do think you should keep looks in mind as well, not just trying to find the best working animal?

Are there any measurements or ratios you keep in mind? Length of the leg or parts of it, back or certain parts?

your going to have to look at it for a good few years and to be fair thats all youve got to go on apart from the normal stuff good neck, head, feet, jaw, chest, back, ect. however pups change so quickly in weeks the smallest can become the biggest and the fattest the thinnest. so as long its its healthy with no obvious faults then yes what pleases the eye is important.

Thanks for you input!

In several threads I saw members mention that with first cross/half cross you have a higher rate of wastage. (This might be obvious to you but however since I'm a lurcher newb) why is this so? Because some of them are not leggy enough?

the cross you choose would depend upon your quarry, given the laws as they stand thats only rabbit and rat. wastage is not just biological its as much man made as anything else

That's utter horseshit. If that were true then how come greyhound breeders have more "wastage" than any other dog breeders? I understand you didnt say it but those who do are wrong and are just spewing shit.

When you say "first cross/half cross" I take it you mean Bull Cross ?

Cheers.

No I was thinking about a GSD, Collie, Dutch Shepherd (on of them, not all) based cross with a grew. Or maybe a cross between my brittany and a whippet. To get something with just that extra gear but doesn't look like a lurcher.
