advice for moles

Recommended Posts

i have read just about all the threads on molecatching and although i can see a good few of you have had some good results i am after any advice going for a new starter, what has happened was with a mate we went for a drive around and knocking doors after new ground, got a few small farms that we were happy with then one of the farmers wifes came out and said do you do moles,i replied no as we have no idea and have never tried it before, she went on to say it was a pity as a freind of hers who has stud horses and a good few hundred acres which the horses are not in has problems with moles ,she then went on to say if we was do the moles we would have the rights to the rabbits and foxes, she left me with no choice but to say we can give it a go,so where do i start, got £80 quid i can spend on traps but what sort of traps are best and what suppliers is best and i have heard about burying traps rubbing them in dirt and leaving them, like i have said i have no idea and explained this to the woman and she said as long as you try the lady with the horses would be happy,so come on guys once i got the traps explain what i have to do,i have seen a freind of mine who does it and when on his farm all the molehills have sticks in them,i am guessing this is some sort of indicator of if the trap has gone off or not,any advice would be great, keep hunting

Use either dufus or fenn mole traps mate, I tend to just stick the traps in fresh runs use a mole probe to fine the tunnels and bang the trap in with a marker pin ie the stick you mentioned..............f**k sticking ferret droppings in as LL mentioned

Lloyd; Didn't you know ~ as any wise old countryman could tell ye ~ that moles are deeply attracted to months old ferret shit? Dear oh lord; Youngsters today!

Wife; Save a lot of us a lot of key bashing (and argy bargying) mate. Go to Google and search out Geoff Nichols - Mole Catcher. Buy his little book and take it from there. It's as good a start from zero as ye'll get. It'll outline all the basics and ye never know, ye may even stop a few.

When the book seems to let ye down and ye can't crack it? Come back here and ask those finer tuned questions. I'm sure ye'll then get answers

Best of luck. Moles even I can catch!

Bury the traps for a bit if they're new, find the tunnel with a probe and dig out a neat (trap sized) hole with a pointing trowel and put the trap in, use the bits of turf removed to fill round the trap handle to block off the light.

Had the same experience years ago TOMO.

A mate was telling me he once set 50 - 60 traps in a field and then the farmer drove round with the chain arrars...said he was rushing about like a blue arsed fly resetting the traps
