gibby 0
Well my ferret kits are about 7 weeks old now and as such are soon to be gradually dispersed to there new homes. Im keeping one jill for myself and the one that caught my eye was the smallest one of the litter, I just really like the look of her shes like a 3/4 scale version of her sisters. Now will the fact that shes small adversly affect her working ability? She may even fill out a bit through time but shes been the smallest since birth despite eating as much and developing as quick as the rest. So yeah, as above will it affect her working ability in a bad way? Personally I dont feel that the size of a ferret makes any difference to whether or not it kills in, but have read that some people feel they have a lack of stamina . Any advice appreciated, Gibby Quote Link to post
gaz 284
You will find out the answers to your questions when you start to work it bud,as for it being a runt proberly not gibby as it would proberly bit the dust by now, well before 7 weeks, if anything as long it stays fit and healthy it proves that its a wee fiesty fighter................just what your looking for in a good worker. IF YOUR NOT SURE I WILL TAKE HER WHEN IM DOWN TO PICK MY TWO UP Edited June 29, 2007 by gaz Quote Link to post

Hywel 53
There are no 100% guarantees that any ferret will make the grade, you just increase the odds of obtaining a good worker by breeding from proven parents. In your case, I'd say you have as much chance as you would have with any other kit from the litter. Don't be deterred by size (or so the misses tells me ) as some of us work smaller ferrets and are more than satisfied with the results. Also, a lot will depend on the type of warren you work as well...... Quote Link to post
ferret15 0
hi i dont think there is any reason aginst the runt i have kept the runt from one of the littlers my self this year as she is a cracking little thing and my first lurcher was sold half price £100 to me as he was the runt of the litter the guy i brought him from said he was to quiet and wouldnt make the grade he saw the dog again at six months and offered me £400 to buy him back i see the guy on a weekly basis now and he says that he is as good a worker as his sire and dame put together ( hes still kicking him self now) but we are gonna breed from him next year so he will be keeping one for him self so i say take a chance she might well turn out to be the best little ferret you have ever had Quote Link to post
gibby 0
Cheers for the advice guys, think my mind was made up weeks ago anyway but I thought I would ask just to make sure there was no major disadvantages Shes certainly got the makings in her to be a good ferret! If she takes after her parents she'll be a wee belter! Cheers Quote Link to post
FERRETBOY 680
i would guess she would turn out same size as the other kits given time.it was the second litter i bred and i decided to keep the runt of the litter because i was after a small ferret but she turned out just as big as her mother.now im older and abit wiser i would always prefere to work decant sized jills as with the smaller sized ferrets the rabbits just give them the run about but my biggish sized jills seem to keep the rabbits in one place making it easy to dig to them.good luck with your ferret gibby. good hunting rew Quote Link to post
