The greyhound collie

Recommended Posts

My 3/8 collie x is 14 months old and in all honesty I have found her hard work. Though clever, very capable and good at the work and training that I have done with her this early on, she just seems to always be going through a phase of defiance or chewing or pissing in the house still or the worst is her seperation anxiety, if I leave her at home in the house for any length of time she is all over the place chewing, yelping, pissing and so on. If I put her in the kennel all she does is bark bark bark and drive the neighbours up the wall. She is like it even when I leave her with my wife and the kids at home, but is happy to sit in my van all day when I go to work and she will barely put a foot wrong.... Weird! But her attitude with the kids is awesome, my 3 year old climbs all over her and she is exceptionally good with her, my ferret was hanging off her nose yesterday while they were out playing and she didn't bat an eyelid, her prey drive is very strong, she marks well and when she is behaving herself I couldn't be happier, but when she isn't, f@ck me, she is a pain in the arse!!!!! I guess thats dogs for you... and I know she is still young, I wish I could of got her at around 7-8 weeks old as apposed to 13 weeks old as I believe this could of made a lot of difference to her behaviour.

Cheers,

Sniffer

Had a border/beardy collie cross in the early 90,s ( A few pics below ). A good honest dog that took everything, i could not have asked for a dog to do any better and was a honest grafter. The only genuine beardy one i seen was a straight half cross and was owned by the old EDRD writer marc h glenn and the dog was often wrote about and was called danny. I watched it work in the old NLRC field trials and from what i can remember was a decent very steady dog. Cheers Atb

I had a half cross border bitch. Lovely dog, family favourite but she drove me nuts.

She basically had the temperament of a full collie. So she was always on edge and that kind of rubbed off on me.

She hated other dogs, fireworks, thunder, jet engines and loud exhausts. She would retrieve balls all day but thought retrieving prey was for gun dogs, lol

She had terrific prey drive pre ban but wimped on bigger stuff. However a reasonable rabbiting/lamp dog.

She was obsessive about reducing thrown sticks to matchwood so that her gums would bleed. Not what i wanted in a lurcher. I wanted something more laid back at home and something balsier in the field.

If i were to get another collie cross, I'd go for a three quarter cross so that the collie temperament was well diluted.

I had a colliex grey/sal. Best dog I ever owned. Recall of a saint. Even in full flight I could recall him if he were heading where he shouldn't. Really usefull when working small land. Had a brilliant double coat so even if it were pissing it down he stayed warm and dry underneath. Plus his feet took him anywhere and he could swim for fun.

Really miss that dog!
