Though I'll admit I don't know much about horses, not far from where I work (Southport) are fields full of black and white horses that are bred and sold to these folk at the different fairs around the country. I am sure it's the same in many parts and would guess that you try and buy off breeders of this type rather than buy where status and bravado inflates price.

I have had horses all my life (apart from at the moment)! I would never ever by a horse from a fair. I have seen quite a few for sale at fairs - you will never get an honest history of the animal and certainly will not know its health record or how it has been treated!

There are thousands of horses available legitimately on the market, who have records (passports which are now a must have) and are resonably price..... if you do really want to buy one from I fair, take someone with you who really knows horses, and will not bed fed a load of shite from the seller. You can age a horse by looking at its teeth - a dealer will always try to sell a 15 year old horse as a 5 year old if they think they can get away with it!

I work in the horse industry, and spend lots of time at horse sales every year.

I would not take a horse from a fair if I got it for nothing. At a proper sale you have some comeback if it goes tits up. You can often pick up a nice quality horse with a minor flaw quite reasonably, rather than being robbed for a pig in a poke.
