Retrieving improving

Recommended Posts

Hi, I own a couple of lurchers. When lamping 1 will retrieve sometimes to 5 yards away and sometimes not at all. He won't chase a ball, but sometimes retrieves a dummy of rabbit fur wrapped around carpet.

Tried the walk away. Once the rabbit seems to stop moving he lets go.

Any tips His Greyhound X Whippet/Saluki. I purchased him as a adult. aged 2. He is the best dog of my 2 for catching by far. Any tips.

Are you taking the 2 out together,? if so take 1 on its own. As the dog is 2 years old the owner before prob (not) trained it proper regards retrieve or basics . When lurcher start to catch+ kill (1st) it hard to change whats in there head more so at 2 years old. You can do all the dummy work you like but when they grab a live kicking rabbit, all that goes out of the window ,because its not got the ground work from a pup, and even trained pups will still piss about with the 1st dozen or so rabbits till tey calm a bit. If it was me i would leave the rabbits just for a while, and get the dog on recall and forget dummys just keep at the dog with recall. it might bring back in the( end) but it may( not) just keep doing the above .

to get to this, is( hours) of recall not much dummy work .!!

Buy a dog in as an adult: buy someone else's mistakes and bad habits. The sighthound mentality needs careful nurturing as a youngster, and a real bond making between you and the pup, or there's little or no chance you can sort out bad habits or lack of early training unless you are a very skilled behaviourist or trainer.
