advice on etching damascus

Recommended Posts

hello there , having had a go at putting english yew scales on a damascus bush craft blank ive polished the pattern off the top and bottom of the tang , well id say sanded off really while working on the handle , the blade it self a bit dull with all the handling too , ive watched a few videos on youtube , using boiling vinagar or ferric chloride to re etch ?

the thing is how do i etch the exposed edges of the tang ? wont the vinagar or chemicals ruin the scales ?

might sound a daft question ,but i know theres a fair few of you lads who know what your doing with this sort of stuff , cheers phil

looking good mate im half way through my first one but didnt have a pillar drill to hand so one of the pins is slightly out, will have to have more patients next time as i could of waited and used one elsewhere but im gettin itchy feet and needed to do something.

have you put a liner between the scales and the tang? i used 0.5 mm brass sheet for this should look good when done

ive done the same with the lanyard tube to be honest , id of liked to use brass liners but id thought id just do the basics this time, i bought all the bits from english made knives , at the midland game fair .

i would say i think the yew scales let the blade down a touch , thanks to some lads off ths site ive got a couple blanks coming and some exotic hardwood ready for the next attempt .
