tegater 789
Just come back in from a quick look out for a fox that has taken a few pheasants and a couple of ducks. Its been chucking it down up here for most of the last few days, the rivers are flooded, the roads are flooded and the drains are lifting. Something said we werent going to have much luck, but with a fox on the ground it had to be done. A drive along the bottem of the valley produced nothing in the howling wind and we could barely hear our own calls and squeeks, still the lamp cut through the rain ok and luckily for once there was no hill fog. We came back along the top of the woods, when my buddy who's land it is, picks up a flash right underneath us and about 50 metres in front. Lamp off, rifle up on aim, and when the lamp came back on, I just made out a fox legging it into a clump of rushes with something in its mouth. There was no escape from the rushes, but out went the lamp, and a few seconds later it got turned back on. There was the fox were we first saw it half in and half out of a rabbit hole. The angle was right still to get a good shot, ensuring the bullet entered its chest cavity, and bang, down it went. When I got down the banking to pick it up, the rabbit holes around it, were absolutley pouring out water, like gargoils, which explained why we had also seen more rabbits than normal out. When I pulled the fox out, there were two baby rabbits literally were the foxes snout would have been! The fox was an old vixen, getting a lucky meal. I can only assume that because the rabbit holes were flooded the young were all sitting near the mouth of the hole to get out of the way of it, with nowhere to go when charlie came a knocking. Still, a few more pheasants will live to see another day, the rain is still lashing it down, and I get an earlier night than expected! 5 Quote Link to post

tegater 789
nice read tegater thx Thanks Seprim, it was slightly different to a usual night lamping. For a second I almost felt guilty shooting it, with its head and shoulders underground, but, that's vermin control. Quote Link to post
Greg223 4
the frost is a good time to get out cause theres less chance of the cubs getting worms so they'll be easier called in (aslong as they aren't lampshy) Quote Link to post
