broonball 38
the pup has come into season, pretty much a year old. think iv noticed her being swollen for around 4/5 days but just noticed bleeding today. how long do i keep her away from dogs? can anybody fill me in with what i should/shouldnt be doing? and reasons why etc. cheers Quote Link to post
Millet 4,497
2 1/2 to 3wk's from start to finnish and she will be fine.. Quote Link to post
bedwhippet 164
they are in season 21 days and usually can be lined from the day they completely stop bleeding but up until there last few days id keep her away for the next 3 weeks, some people stop al work when bitches come in season some work them through it,, all about preferance and what you want to do Quote Link to post
broonball 38
apart from accidental mating, is there any dangers if i do work her? if my reckoning is right she should be fine 2weeks on sunday. might give the grass time to die off, suppose it gives me a bit more time to get the ferret kits up and running too. should her food be kept the same? she isnt going to be getting her usual amount of excercise if iv gotta be overly careful wi her.cheers Quote Link to post
Millet 4,497
Just get her out and about and walk her as normal aslong as you are not planning on 40 run's a night she will be fine..as for the food intake i would just feed her like you normaly do as you can still excersise her.. broonball 38
how long do they normally bleed for, or is it different for each bitch? iv just noticed blood droplets on the kitchen tiles and as she has run of the house normally im going to have to keep her confined until she stops bleeding.thanks for the feedback Quote Link to post
Millet 4,497
It varies on how long they bleed for the first season is usualy the messiest from what i have whitnessed over the year's..normaly the bleeding should ease up around the 14 day mark but it could also be before or after..you will just have to batten down the hatches and ride the storm.. broonball 38
i had a feeling that would be the case, anyone fancy dog sitting for a couple of weeks? Quote Link to post
Millet 4,497
Just stick here in one of them dog crate's while your at home..or put a pair of your Y front's on here to stop the mess but don't forget to take them of when you go for a walk.. Quote Link to post
gnipper 6,786
My pup just had her first season and I kept her away from my others for 4 weeks to be on the safe side. Mate of mine had a greyhound bitch that was tested by the vet daily to see when she was ready to mate and it was the 22nd day. Quote Link to post
broonball 38
just to prolong the agony!! it should be easy enough to keep her away from dogs. i just hope she doesnt turn like my dads parsons bitch who lifts her tail for any dog, and looks for it. amazingly she has never been pupped in 9years. to be honest i'v always said this is a shame because a better temprement dog you would struggle to find. always been very patient with 99% of dogs and bitches, especially lively lurcher pups. the 1% she doesnt like she will go at like the devil. skycat 6,174
Whilst Millet is correct in most details, it would be best to keep her away from male dogs for a month: some bitches have been known to stand at 21 days, and still be interesting to dogs even later. Don't take any chances! And some are ready to mate as early as a week after the first showing of blood, as I once found out to my cost! Quote Link to post
broonball 38
Y FRONTS? that was a long time ago . i'll not be taking any chances, cant be doing with a pup with pups. havent got the space, time or money. i'v been thinking about getting her spade but think i may regret it down the line somewhere so as said before, batten doon the hatches. to keep the thread going what are peoples views on having a bitch spade? i know there is always a massive debate when breeding is mentioned, but how many people decide at the start that they will not breed??
