Stella- SalukiXBullGreyhound

pups coming on very well now! apart from recently when walking she's fine recall is fine, but after about 15-20mins of walking she will not come back when called, stands about 3meters from me and bolts when i try to get her :S, i've tried treats and this doesnt work, its only by chance i seem to get her back! my friends who have older lurchers say this may just be a phase, just wondering if anyone else has an idea of what i could do or have had a problem with this?

thanks for all help if given:)

i know its hard but dont raise ye voice or threaten to slap the pup for it, if it was me id sit doon an refuse to move till the dog come to me, or try walking the other way if it wanders off instead of standing looking at ye, i repeat dont lose it tho, or itll end up worse, even when out for a walk call the dog back a good few times an refuse to move until the dog comes, an you either put your hand on its collar an lelt it move off again or put it on a lead for 50/100yds then let it off again, itll soon relise that gettin put on a lead aint the end of its fun

thanks for the advice Reddawn, i have tried standing my ground and in the end she decides to walk off as she pleases, what would your opinion be on a long lead trying the recall from gradual distances and then back to using no lead:)?

iv never used a long lead for recall pal, i persoanlly think dogs aint daft an know they cannae go anywhere on a long lead, so just come back anyways, only time i ever used 1 was for stock breaking a mad older lurcher i brought in, that dont mean it wont work tho, are you getting anoyed when you stand ye ground an she walks away?? dogs can pick up on the slightest a change to our voice an body language

reddawn- yeah i do get annoyed with her because it takes sometimes over 40mins to get her back no matter what i try. i'll add the majority of the time this happens when its just me and her, when im out with other people she tends not to do it or for maybe a short 5mins.

littlefish- yeah i've tried walking away and she'll either run past me, or as i turn be at a distance just out of reach and bolt off in the other way.

this has not long started happening because before the recall was coming on well and im just thinking myself and what other people have said about it being a phase at a certain age to just try and ride it out, be persistant and maybe she'll stop at somepoint, but all the help given by people is appreciated and i will try other opinions given thanks

id say she is just going a funny teenage rebelious stage pal, but in saying that i wouldnt be standing there shouting on a dog thats not gonna come, you are just letting the dog think not to come when called is okay, try an keep her on a lead for a while mate, an let her off when ye think you have go ther more under control, i never ask a pup to do summat i dont think it will if that makes sense, i try an only ever ask for what i know it can/will do, id go back to basics with the dog whilst waiting for her stage to pass

It will be just a phase she is going through. Keep her on the lead and call her name - when she looks up at you give her a bit of cheese or sausage. Build it it up to practising off the lead - reward her with food when she comes and praise her up with your voice. Keep your cool and don't expect too much for a while - keep it short and fun.
