im after a couple of bits of advice if you can guys and dolls,i'm new to air rifles and forums so please excuse me if i sound like a three year old,,,,,i own a hw80 and a hw97k, the hw80 is a second hand gun and after taking it to target sports to be checked and tested they said they could do nothing with it as it had been messed with ( bored out i think he said ),is there any way of restoring this gun back to its legitimate glory as i dont want to lose it,it was by the way only firing at 7flb.

Also can anyone advise on a decent but not expensive scope for either rifle, i have a hawke 3-9x40 map at present, but the scope keeps losing its zero every few shots, (hope its not the gun) had the gun two years but not really used it, thanks for your time

Hi Bud the gun has most probably been reamed. They drill a small v upto the transfer port.So the piston can push through more air.Seen a few hw80 with this done some years ago.100 yard kill easy.

Hi mate and welcome.

Go onto the air rifle forum under Reviews and Technical where a greater number of lads with skilled knowledge can best help you. Sounds to me like this was a reamed port for turning your HW80 to FAC level performance..illegally as the net results of tampering with it are a reduction in power to little more than an air pistol. If you do not have a Firearms certificate from the police, this HW80 is a dead duck as far as you are concerned. It will need tuning to well above the legal 12ft/lb limit to make this previous reaming work make any sense. Otherwise it is letting too much air bleed through on firing and thus, you are getting such a poor loss of power.

I've found to my cost that some of the Hawke scopes are not all that strongly put together for use on higher powered spring rifles and this one may have been damaged by sharp, hefty recoil when this HW80 was performing at higher than 12ft/lbs. I had one Hawke Eclipse scope try out with my FAC HW80 and the reticle under the recoil was shaken from a cross to an X..! If yours is losing zero when you shoot a few shots, it seems to have been damaged.

HW80s combine superbly with Simmons Whitetail Classic scopes; which are much better built. Personally, I'd scrap this HW80 and buy a brand new one. They are incredibly superb air rifles and this one sounds a sorry state to be in.

Regards.
