AndyKelly 251
as you are well aware that they has been an outbreak of canine distemper round the area i have phoned round local vets and have found interesting info about the cd jab. alot of people with one or two ferrets may be put off when thinking about the jab at the price. if you ask about 1 ferret you will be quoted around the £30 mark which seems steep what i realized today is the more ferrets the cheaper it is. 1 ferret was coming in at £30.70, three ferrets came in at £32.75 and four ferrets at £35.50 so if you want them done and know a mate who wants them done to a 'bulk' order at the vets is by far the cheapest option as the vial that has the vaccine in is broke you are charged for the full vial and what people dont realize is you pay for the full vial weather it does 1 or 4 Quote Link to post
DanRaistrick 53
considered getting mine done after a scare a few weeks ago, however later found out that a viral infection in ferrets is going around at the minute, mine are currently on antibiotics and recovering well. if anybody has ferrets that seem unwell i recommend you get them straight to the vets as ive lost 2 ferrets due to it in the past few weeks Quote Link to post
Lewis Ste 245
How would they catch it? Do they have to be in contact with a ferret that already has it? Lewis Quote Link to post
AndyKelly 251
dont have to be anywhere near an infected ferret - it can be picked up in the field whilst working, humans can carry it in on clothing,it's an airborn virus , foxes, badgers, weasles and stoats carry it too Quote Link to post
AndyKelly 251
so pleased you were vigilant dan - hope they pick up quickly from the infection they had and thank god it wasnt cd Quote Link to post
graham4877 1,181
Is it not just the dog jab they give? but say split up to do all the ferrets?? say they'd give a dog 10ml but split it to 1ml each per ferret? Quote Link to post

AndyKelly 251
all i know mate from what the vet told me is that one vial will do up to 4 ferrets though some people give a half vial. through reserch we are gathering the dosage seems to vary though we have not had a report of a death through the vaccine being introduced to the ferret. the north east ferret rescue has a policy to vaccinate ferrets and when they had the recent outbreak have only lost two ferrets so i presonally think that this speaks volumes. and yes it is the vaccine that the dogs get. AndyKelly 251
in all the 40 odd years i have been ferreting i have never once thought about vaccinating ferrets but have changed my views as at the moment due to this outbreak being in my area and after careful reserch i think its for the best Quote Link to post
