Custom stock, Legal length of an Air rifle?

Just recently I undertook that task of hand crafting my own S300 stock, the stock turned out very well and on the whole I was quite pleased with the constructive criticism received from my fellow shooters.

 

 

Having received my first order for a Ww72 custom stock for another S300, I began pondering the idea of a "bullpup" stock as an alternative to the standard rifle stock I have already, it was at this point I heard that there is a LEGAL length an air rifle has to be!

 

My question is quite an obvious one!

 

What are the Legalities involved with Rifle lengths? better still where can I find the "correct" information myself?

I can't help with legal lengths of stocks. All i can say is, nice looking stock.

stock as no minuim size , but an air rifle as to be at least 600mm overall ... so if the barrel is long enough you could have as small a stock as you like ..

Hi Chris,

As promissed I'd look into this further.

 

Firearms must have an overall minimum length of 600mm however this does not apply to airguns or muzzle loaders! A Shotgun must have barrels no shorter than 24 inch (600mm) however the stock for these are not regulated.

Although a grey area, (purely because it does not state a size in written law) airguns could be as short/long as you wish as long as it does not exceed the power limits laid out in Statute Law.

Apparently.... From the (then) owner, John Cooper of Falcon

 

"The answer given to Falcon Pneumatics when they made a very short rifle was that there is no minimum length for a rifle; however the stock must be designed to be shouldered and used with two hands.

 

If it isn't designed like this then it would be classified as a pistol with a 6ftlbs limit."

 

Because some take downs like the Air Arms could be used one handed they are designed such that removing the butt renders them unable to fire.

Nope! is the simple answer to that.

 

If indeed that was the case one of our regular members would not have been allowed to import his Matador PCP as they are under 30 inches (29 and a bit) from muzzle to tip of butt. He'd be walking around with a 12ft/lbs pistol

 

Minimum length for a Fire Arm is 600 mm, but not including Muzzle loaders or Air guns
