gaz 284
question lads, how do i stop my hounds hunting after say a hare if im out after foxes? It depends on three things really whitser, firstly and most importantly it depends on how competent a dog trainer you are, by this i mean how well your dog responds to STAY,NO or LEAVE. Secondly the type of cross and how fired up your dog is a factor aswell, and by this i mean a collie cross is obviosly going to be more biddable than say a saluki ect. Thirdly it will depend on how far your dogs work out in front of you but that proberly goes back to how competent a dog trainer you are i suppose.........hope this helps and good luck whitser Quote Link to post
lampinglurcher 36
am i right in assuming you run scenthounds, whitser? if so ~ practically impossible! Quote Link to post
pointer28 1
Certainly not impossible, we run a pack of beagles after hares and they never bother with fox scent at all. We never encourage them to chase foxes and they never rag a fox carcass so they never associate fox scent with their job. Any failed beagles that don't suit hare hunting, we usually give to lads for hunting foxes, and they pick it up in no time once they get to rag a carcass, but they will always still hunt hares as it's what they know. pointer28 1
If a fox jumps out in front of them, they'll chase it but the huntsman will never holler them onto it or blow away on the horn. Eventually when they check he'll manage to call them off. Very seldom happens though as we tend to hunt open land rather than cover where you wold expect to out up a fox. Ours are proper stud book beagles (not KC crap) bred from hare hunting stock for the last 300 years, so none of their ancestors would have been fox hunters either. Quote Link to post

Guest whitser
i asked an experienced huntsman the same question and his answer said it all... " hounds will hunt a fox before anything, but they'll hunt anything before nothing." Edited May 30, 2007 by whitser Quote Link to post
