torchey 1,328
Had a clutch and slave cylinder fitted but since i got it back its grinding changing down in 1st and 2nd gear.I did drive it home when the slave cylinder went so there was a bit of grinding going on would that have caused the problem i,ve got now or could it be the way the clutch has been fitted?.any advise welcome

Baghdadnights 150
The grinding changing down is most likely due to worn syncros in the box quite possible you've damaged them driving without the clutch Just to check its not a clutch fault does the car select reverse ok without any grinding

baw 4,360
Is the revs high when your changing down?
RossM 8,149
Depending how competent the garage is when it comes to filling these gearboxes with oil, the filling plug isn't that easily accessed and below it there is something that resembles a filler plug "THIS IS NOT IT!!" drain oil out of box and check it has no metal shaving in it, im sure these boxes take 2.7l in main box and 2.5l in transfer box, if it has been filled wrong chances are not enough oil and box has run dry. RossM 8,149
The grinding changing down is most likely due to worn syncros in the box quite possible you've damaged them driving without the clutch Just to check its not a clutch fault does the car select reverse ok without any grinding Correct me if I'm wrong would synchros not cause it to crunch make gear selection difficult, and/or jump out of gear rather than grind? baw 4,360
I think when he said grind he meant crunch. That's how I read it anyhow.

To be honest it is probably more of a crunch than a grind,as you can tell mechanics isn,t my strong point
baw 4,360
Get it took back mate, sounds like the selector needs adjusted to me.

Just started it up and it doesn,t crunch going up or down in any gear when stationary Would say that rules out hydraulics then, the higher the revs/faster you go does it whine? If it doesn't and it's banging into gear and crunching in 1st to 2nd going up and down the gears I would be inclined to say it is the synchros/sliding hub, will probably need 1st&2nd gear, sliding hub & synchros.
