stoping a salukihound from whinging

Recommended Posts

salukis and saluki x's dont do as well as other dogs when it comes to a new owner. thats if you bought it at an older age.

ya he 14mnts only av him few weeks

that could be why, they're a sensitive breed, will take time to gain a bond, and once you have you will be fine. Atb

I had same thing with one I had as soon as shut kennel door he would start barking and howling I tried everything but wouldn't stop him tried water shock collar even had him in house but as soon left room would start lol

thats exzactly how my lad is at the moment no matter how long were out walking/hunting even all night second pen door closes he starts and its fair annoying

That isn't "carrying on for no reason", this happens mainly when you shut the door or leave the dog so it is the dog letting you know it isn't too fond of being left.

A Kong is a hollowed cylindrical rubber toy that you can fill with part of the dog's daily meal to give them the opportunity to chew and provides a bit of mental stimulation for them whilst they are on their own. Providing a dog with one of these every time you leave or just once every other day reinforces in the dog that you going isn't a bad thing and the challenge of getting the grub out redirects their minds onto something pleasurable - eating and chewing. Dogs love to chew and it releases hormones into the body that act as a kind of endorphine - a feel good buzz - which is why dogs chew things when stressed if left alone or just provided the opportunity to do so.

TIP: Put the Kongs or stuff bones in the freezer over night to provide more of a challenge, make them last longer and sooth sore gums or tetthing pups.

You have only had the dog 3 weeks and it is over it's pup stage meaning that it was used to a previous environment, it is now in your environment and it iwll be stressful for the dog regardless so providing a bit of an outlet for it is no bad thing and will help both you and the dog.

If you have a set routine with the dog then gradually the dog will get used to the routine and will be able settle in knowing what to expect and when to expect it. It will learn that it will get fed , it will get walked, it will get the opprotunity to relax and it will get to spend time with you. A dog that doesn't have a routine will be on edge as it is tryiong to anticipate what's coming next all of the time and this causes anxiety.

Why folk chastise a dog for whining is beyond me, the dog is trying to tell you something, probably that it is stressed or anxious and it gets shouted for being anxious making it even more anxious. If it whines when you are out and it has to remain on the lead whilst you wait up for a chance to run it then it will be wanting to get going and just needs to learn to be patient so spend time working on "stay" type commands and get the dog used to being patient away from the field. Once a dog learns self control it will be much better prepared and the owner won't be rollocking it without understanding it.

The good news is the more you walk/work saluki lurchers the more they want to be walked or worked, if you don't walk them they'll wine, if the ice cream man comes round thell howl, when you walk another dog and don't walk them thell how'll and wine.

No worse dog for it I find.

I don't even know I've got deerhound lurchers there so quite in kennels, but the saluki is a highly strung annoying hound to kennel.

But then are they absolute supreme athlete in the Lurcher world and as a running/staying dog nothing else comes close.

So get a canine calm collar or just ignore it and reap the rewards of these frustrating but brilliant dogs.

thanks for ur info ignoring him is working a treat thanks again
