gist/kist traps

Recommended Posts

Guest foxtrack
I was reading through my newly arrived "Working terrier yearbook" compilation and I noticed a few mentions of a rudimentary catch alive fox trap called a gist/kist trap.

Anyone got any info on this - I'm intrigued.

the gist trap was made as part of a stone wall

andcan still be seen in parts off south to mid wales and yorkshire

they say that john parks the terrier man knew a thing or two about them

and they work still to this day ;)

There ye go. Bloody Moddie's should be racing round doing this and explaining what I'm about to

Martin; To show a 'Live Link'; Click the little earth with the chain links in front of it. Box opens. Pop ye URL in there. Click OK. Then write, eg. " Live Link " in the next box that opens. Click Ok and there ye go. Ok?

Incidentaly; That picture's of the trap Old shows us the workings of. Both have very little to do with a proper Gist / Kist Trap. G/K is made out of stone slabs and slates.

Come on Ditch be fair, not all the Bloody Moddies are on at quarter to one in the morning.

And surely I get some credit for posting a link in this thread to the same reference material nine posts and 16 days earlier :tongue2:

Martin - if you have 'how to' questions post a topic in the general section mate and you'll always get help. Here you go:

The pics I posted are simplified line drawings of stone and slate made traps. Examples exist to this day on the Dartmoor and Brecon Beacons age old warren workings, often built into the stone boundary wall or at the centre of the X shaped guide wall in the case of the 'vermin' traps. There are also rabbit drop traps (remarkably similar to the ones we use today but made in stone) in some warren walls. I will try to find the pics I have of those ;)

A chap by the name of RG Haynes wrote a paper back in 1970 on the old fox and vermin traps on the warrens of Dartmoor and Beacons. It is an archaelogical reference but discusses all of the above at length.

That wooden cat trap has the same action, granted, but it is not the sort of thing I was referring to.

I believe they can be made from both stone and wood. they were designed for catching foxes that had been run to ground by hounds in places the terriers couldnt get. They were small and tight so that the fox could not turn round. I have seen fox caught in the wooden types.

Foxtrack - could you maybe take some photos and post them up ?

john you remember the clay shoot down in wales ?

well theres one on the hill above there

this ones made of slate but most further south they are made of blue pennent slabs

john i aint got a clue how to put a pic on this thing

but i'll be taking wife and hafod out on a few days shortly and i'll get one of

them boys to send you a few pics

another thing i,ve found is theres no fixed type all based around the dead fall set up

and of the five i know of three are different in constuction

what realy gets me going is the fact that they are maybe hundreds of years old

and with a few repairs can still work

i'll ask one of the boys to send you a few pics as soon as we can ;)
