working ferrets ???? help

Recommended Posts

hi all was asked by one of my permissions on a campsite to help clear his rabbit population, so fine i had a look around and said yep will be great for the winter for the ferrets to work.. how ever he did show me an old portacabin 40ftLx20ftw and happens to have a warren under that too. you can not get under the thing you have a few runs from were they run in and out, which i have put snares on, as he wants them gone.

he was asking if in the winter i can ferret it in the winter, but im not sure i think it would be a knight mare trying to get the ferret back even with a locator.and when you have a look under the cabin you can really see under it so cant see were the holes are.. also would have to long net the hole cabin i think...

any ideas.....i am aloud to use air rifle, ferret and snares.....have snared one last night and went to check them today and seen lots of young sitting just out side so might snare up the every run and etrance i can find...

Done loads of places like that, including some buries under concrete slabs on a caravan site. Ferret ain't going to stay down there for ever, even if it does kill. ;) They make a hell of a noise bumping about under those portacabins before they fly out, far play!:thumbs:

All you can do in a situation like that is do the best you can net purse net whatever poss then longnet or trammel net round the cabin and go for it try and stand as still as you can so the rabbits hole hoping dont see your feet moving about if the ferrets put enough pressure on them they should bolt away from the cabin good luck with it mate

thats the thing tho, you can only see a rabbit run were they come up from under the cabin, not the hole down to the warren... would you just let the ferret loose around the run and hope it finds its own way???

all i have is purse nets so would have to get long nets..never used one before..were can i get them from????plus it would have to be a good 100yrds to go round the thing it is sat next to a wall and you can just about walk down the side of it but not much space.

i wouldnt try it till the young are older (i think) will contuine the snares till then..or should i??

it'll find its way down.. plenty of times ive put my ferrets down for them to go running down a hole i didnt see.. wouldnt worry about that.

i dont know much about long nets but thinking about getting one soon. sorry no help there..

I would probabley keep snaring them if there is plenty around in other locations.. however if its a bit thin and thats the main area i might not put as many out .. just to keep the permission worth going to to be honest

They will find the hole if its there mate, we often drop rabbits by hedges or cover, not at the actual hole and they always find them.

Maybe your best bet is finding someone with a long net to come give you a hand for a day?

I'd wait a while to do that one, but would probably take an evening and go down with the air rifle or at night with the lamp and air rifle and knock over a few.
