skycat 6,174 Posted May 22, 2012 Report Share Posted May 22, 2012 It is not the amount of protein the dog gets, but the amount of fats and carbs as well. A diet which is low in carbs and fats will make the dog very lean. I've found that most Saluki types need more carbs than some other types. My Collie lurcher gets no carbs or she gets as fat as a pig, but my Saluki blooded dog needs carbs or he looks like a hat rack. Very active dogs and growing pups need a well balanced diet containing enough protein (for growth) but also need a lot of fat (for energy). A lot of chicken from pet food suppliers is low in fat. I've never yet had a dog look skinny on a raw diet (minced beef, chicken carcases, lamb ribs etc) together with carbs: oats seem to be best, though rice is OK. Rabbit is very low in fat and if you are only feeding rabbit you need to add extra fat to the diet. Quote Link to post
