small types bushing

small types can take to bushing as well as any terrier,or can they?got a good nose on them and they can,got a little bitch just over 20tts which at 8 months will go into cover like a terrier and catches,not quite the face any cover type just yet she has to find a run for a way in at times or come in from the other side but even so knows what she looking for and aint afraid to get amongst it.

never really thought of lamping her for anything other than a few bunnies always new going to be a small bitch but what a credit to a daytime team she turning out to be.

if i was an out and out lamper then id of gone for something bit bigger but i have that covered with a 25tts ish bitch already so she purely mooching about day time bitch at the moment and after a bit of a frustrating start with general discipline wouldnt be without her now.

i know big words for an 8 month old pup but more than happy with her and as iv said before lamping aint the be all end all.

if you was to own a small dog purely for mooching about daytime what would it be i know the beddy/whip types seem popular for ferreting but is there a particular type you would want.

my little bitch,saluki/greyx collie whip x3/4whip/grey,great coat on her for getting in the rough stuff

small lurchers can graft exceptionally, in some cases better than a terrier, i have a 22" whippet bitch, never useto bush, one day shed found a gorse bush with a rabbit in, she marked and marked, she was only a year and half at the time, the terrier wasnt coming, i sent her in and she flew at the bush and pulled the rabbit out! ive only seen her do it a few times, and a few of my mates have, but she hits the bush hard and fast and it works, great pics everyone

good to hear of a whip getting in ,if i was to want a small type purpose bred as it were would be wanting good coat on it suppose thats why lot lads favour the beddy types,the lad who bred her was wanting them with good bit coat so i was lucky in that respect she doent seem phased by cover at all now she getting going

I have a wee dog here thats main talent is hunting up and bushing in the day, if it's there he will find it, whatever it is, fur or feather, he might not catch it, but he will find it and get it moving. He will follow air scents, until he hits a ground scent and then follow that to the quarry. I've seen him cover huge distances with his nose to the ground, and he usually always finds what he is looking for. He does the freeze and dive quite a bit at rabbits in cover.

 

Having said all that, he still wouldn't beat a good terrier at working hard cover, and anyone who says a runner can, is a bit deluded.

didnt mean it to sound like she fair better than a terrier although prob come across like that but never had a small type she gets stuck in with my terrier all the time but yes agree what your saying,she got good nose on her and has no trouble pushing up the bunnies but also as you say watched her following air scent then nose down going into the rape flushing pheasants cheers

You,ve raised a good point there mate, I,m not so sure you,re wanting the dog to get right into the cover like a terrier, better of with a dog which gives a mark and waits for you to beat the bush and position itself for the bolt

i was wanting to get the use out of my mongrel staffie x for a bit of bushing,poacher 31537465 what ever the number is (del)suggested getting them out early, ground holding scent better and it worked so to with this little bitch
