Woodpigeons

Recommended Posts

Went for a walk around the fields looking for some woodpigeons , I came across one on the other side of the hedge from me on the ground , anyone know why these birds would come down to the ground in fields , is there a food source ? I also notices alot of them in trees that have alot of greenery so I wasn't able to see them but I could here them , I was just wondering if they usually land in the same trees and if sitting in the area and waiting for them to land is effective ?

Woody spend alot of time on the ground mate......they eat crops and fresh green shoots, berries, nuts and seeds....they also during the autum to spring have specific roost's and will go from one to another if disturbed......they are very wary birds and at slightest noise or disturbance they fly off......they are a nice challenge because of this....when you see alot of them in fields over a period of lets say a few day's this is because the food source is plentyful and they will keep returning until the supply is exhausted and then move on......you can either decoy these feilds and wait out of site....this includes keeping your face and hands covered or if you find a roost get there early before they start comming in and pick them off like that...again you will need to be well hidden

when i was sat at my usual 'plinking range' the other week the magpies would always sit in one tree to my left, the woodys always in the same tree in front of me, and the crows always in a tree to the right of where i was sitting..

also,, over a period of about 6-7 weeks this has always been the case. so figure out the right tree then your sorted!!

so if you know there 'favorite' tree get camo'd up n sit n wait

good luck pal

Thanks for the feedback , went out for another walk about the fields again earlier and and spotted my first woodie about 70 yards away in the grass , decided to stalk in a little closer but by the time I was within range he had waddled into the hedge , but I'm determined and will be out again tomorrow :)
