The Azawakh, a native of Africa, is named for a valley in northeastern Mali where it was first discovered.  Despite this geographic derivation, however, these Sight Hounds have long lived across most of north Africa where they acted as companions, protectors and hunting assistants to Tuareg Bedouins.  Also known as the Azi, the dogs begin hunting as puppies by chasing animals.  They are also highly socialized by spending time with the young members of the tribe.  Although the ancestry of the Azawakh is unknown, images from ancient Egypt suggest that the breed has existed for perhaps three thousand years.  The dogs came to Europe, particularly France, with the return of military officers during the 20th century and later to the United States.  While they may be related genetically to other Sight Hounds, the connections are still uncertain.  Azawakhs are recognized by most rare breed clubs.

Other Names: Idi, Hanshee, Oska, Rawondu, Bareeru, Tuareg Sloughi, Azi
