Picking up.

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a bit of picking up for my 3yr old ESS for next season. I already beat with her at my local shoot but I'm ideally looking for a few days picking up to vary things for her a bit. The shoot I beat at already has a number of people picking up so I don't get much chance.

I live in Bristol but I'm willing to travel for the opportunity and can be available most days during the week and always on a saturday!

Dog is fully trained and steady to game and I have over 10 years experience of working ESS and being in the shooting field.

So if any of you out there run a shoot or are just involved with one and need an extra pair of hands (or paws) picking up next season drop me a PM.

Thanks in advance.

I hate to say it but to be honest a picker up with one dog isnt all that much use so unless you are volunteering then you may find people reluctant to take you on.

It can be done there is no doubt but you are very limited on small days let alone big ones in the area you can cover especially if you have a spaniel that has been trained for beating it will not 'get out into the country' like a good picking up dog will.

Good luck in your search though, picking up is very satisfying when you can get into it.

Thanks for the replys.

Not looking to be a sole picker uper (if that's a word!!) just offering to help out on a shoot if someone could do with an extra picker up - and of course it will be free of charge! I do if for the love of the sport, not for payment.

I've joined NOBS but have heard they're not all that good?

So trying a few different avenues.

3 is good, we have a couple of blokes that come with 2 but more is better IF they are well trained (a lot of pickers up seem to have less well trained dogs than the beaters do, just more of them!)

One thing i will say is that with a single spaniel you will need to be getting right into the cover yourself in order to do a half decent job and get the dog working both sides of you (as if beating). Not glamorous and a lot of the people doing it regard picking up as an easy option btu it isn't.

As i said, good luck with it and you will soon be getting yourself another dog i reckon!

Hi guys I and 2 mates are looking for some permission for some rabbit hunting in cornwall but can’t find where to ask. I and my mates are all greatly skilled with air rifles from just sitting in the back of our gardens with targets roughly 50-100yards and want to move onto small game so if anyone knows of anyone in cornwall that would give us permission please let me know.

Hi, we're having a sudden rat infestation on our small holding in North Cotswolds. Wondering if there are any people around with ratting dogs who want a bit of work?
