PoshPikey 560
keep a record of where you are planting what this year because you'll need to know next year and the year after and its amazing how fast you'll forget. Looks like a croft you on there,.
JohnGalway 1,043
I'm just pissing around this year to be honest PP. I've not done any of the above with crop rotation in mind. For next year I'll have a more well defined plan in place for locations, specific veg and future rotation. I've been away a couple of days and came back this morning to my spuds looking quite sad after getting a hammering from the wind. Ordered 2 meter high windbreak mesh online this afternoon, will need to get poles etc set up. Sh1t happens, especially when I close the door after the horse has bolted! Yep, that's my sheep farm Edited June 8, 2012 by JohnGalway
JohnGalway 1,043
I'm a bit concerned about what's in the photographs below, especially the discolouration on the stalks. I don't know if this is normal or not, or perhaps an after effect of the high winds they suffered (the stalks literally moved in the ground, plenty of branches broken), or disease? Millet 4,497
Could be nutrient burn John...if you are using too much fertilizer i would lay of it for now and just flush with pure water..
JohnGalway 1,043
They get a bit of tomato feed once a week, though I ran out this week so they've had none for 9 days now, no other fert used, I have a bed of matured sheep manure under where I planted the seed spuds but no other ferts. Millet 4,497
Can't be nutrient burn John i have seen similar wind burn damage though on some type's of shrub's in the garden aswell as on conifer hedge's..
JohnGalway 1,043
As long as it's not disease I'm happy enough They really did get the shit kicked out of them with the wind a few days back. Edited June 10, 2012 by JohnGalway
JohnGalway 1,043
The small one was about the size of a hens egg, boiled and devoured
JohnGalway 1,043
Dug up two tops, pleased with the size of one variety, the other is a bit small and mismatched yet, so I'll leave them longer. What's the deal with the darker spuds, are they the original seed spuds or what? I was told they were supposed to melt away and not be in the ground come harvest but I don't know that may not be right.
JohnGalway 1,043
Problem, or not? White dots on me tubers! I think there were white dots on the stalks as well but can't quite remember.
JohnGalway 1,043
Done a little looking up, I think the white dots are called "lenticels" and act like pores for the spuds. Or it's a horrible disease, lol.
Millet 4,497
Did you find out what the white spot's are John as i don't have a clue..
JohnGalway 1,043
Yeah, they're "lenticels" alright. I didn't do a huge amount of looking into what they are, they act like pores for the spuds. Google will give you more info on them than I can right now
