Good Morning

Recommended Posts

was going to be on my own again this morning but rang a mate last night and asked if he wanted a morning out as his work with the terriers is all but done

so on the land at first light and it was decided we'd do the rough side of the farm, this side of the farm is massive banks of gorse and briar some parts of this you can

send your dog in and might not see it till it comes out some 800yds away, but it will always hold rabbits and most of the setts are very deep, you dont get a mark on a

16ft box and it will only get worse now the badgers have taken up residence

the dog worked his arse off pushing rabbits to ground but i could'nt give him his reward as there just to deep to ferret, in the end he pushed some to ground in a sett we

could do as they go about 8ft on this particular bank, we netted up and collared the jill up and entered her where the dog had marked within 2 minutes the first rabbit was in the bag

still no sign of the ferret so out with the box and get a mark of 3ft happy days a quick dig and number 2 joins his mate, nets up and move on

we did'nt have to go far before he marked a sett on the edge of a field which dropped down into a bank only a 7 holer so nets on and jill in and an almost instant bolt

it was about 9-30 now so with 3 in the bag we decided to go and do a few hedgrows on the other side of the farm.

we decide to start with the roadside hedge, the dog was working away in front of us when he gives us a mark so i take the roadside ditch full of briar and my mate gets the nice flat field

last year this was a 3 holer but they've been busy as its a 10 holer now drops the jill in and nothing for about 10 mins, i get a mark at 3ft under the hedge so left her a few minutes

and checked again, still there so started digging it was hard work with it being in the hedge, got down about 2ft and checked again b*****d had moved so searched again got her at 2ft

nice easy dig and a rabbit in a stop end the jill had shown and gone back and the locator was showing she was back at the original spot so a bit of a scrape with the spade and i was in

but as i broke through it bolted and the net snagged in the briar and was away across the road

the dog knows that when the nets are being lifted its time to move on and before we had them in the bag he was marking again this time we used the hob, he's only small smaller than alot

of jills and he's a cracking grafter he can shift a stubborn rabbit aswell as kill it if need be. this was only a small 6 holer and we had 2 out in no time at all, one out of an unseen bolt hole but the dog had it within a couple of yards

he marked a tree stump really going for it biting lumps out of it,it was only 2 holes or so we thought when my pal says notices a rabbits head sticking out of the tree stump on his

side good job the ferret had a grip of it or it would of been away, the rabbit backs up back into the stump and bolted into the net on my side

we carried on up this hedge and did a couple more setts and ended up with 9 big healthy rabbits.

on the way back to the van we walked another hedgeline and the dog marked about 5 setts so back again me thinks in the week

alright darbo

glad the nets are doing there job mate

my dogs lurcher to lurcher both parents being collie bred there's a bit of gwp in there aswell

he's out of chipper smith's nell to a simon fayre's dog

he was out ferreting from 12wks of age and was marking rabbit's at 41/2 mths

i always break a dog on their own, then they have to work things out for themselves

i think you get a more honest dog that way, not one that will hang back and let other dogs do the work

he was 3 in oct, does'nt miss a trick really, doing really well

does'nt like strangers though but thats not a bad thing in my eyes
