Understanding shotgun cartridges... I don't?

The sizes and is basically what I dont get, I can understand the weight.. a little explaination would'nt for a miss for a dummie

I wouldn't take too much notice of the recommendations on that article

 

The technical stuff is fine but I certainly wouldn't choose No.2 Steel shot to shoot a Pheasant which is what is suggested on there...unless I wanted a curry-ready bird with chunks missing.
