It's disgusting when you consider 50,000 bomber aircrew lost their lives. The leftie wierdos spent all their time concentrating on Dresden and asking whether it was really necessary but the fact remains Germany was a very dangerous enemy right up to the end. The damage done it its industry and the general disruption done to those cities will have contributed massively to her down fall. Disgusting how they treated Harris if he hadnt stuck to what he believed in many more of our lads would have been killed its his efforts that shortened the war by his blanket bombing , i know thousand upon thousands were killed but hell fire this country was fighting for its very existance, dont forget they had us beat and drove us into the sea at Dunkirk there was only a narrow strip of water some 18miles across that acted as a natural barrier, My owd chap said if Hitler had kept going and invaded then we only had pitch forks to defend ourselves at that time. Bomber Harris should have a National Monument erected after him like Nelson did in Trafalger Sq for if it wasnt for him and those lads in Bomber Command I tell you we all would not be enjoying the freedom that we have today and thats a fact. thr is a statue of harris at a church on the strand nr trafalger square.. Thanks for that info ,something I wasnt aware of admitedly, unusual thing to place in a church though i might add do you know the history of why it was put there? the_stig 6,614 Posted February 6, 2012 Report Share Posted February 6, 2012 (edited) stu---the statue was installed in 1992 and unveiled by the queen mum at st clement dane raf church on the strand , the church was completed by christopher wren in 1682 and is the main church of the raf ... inside the welsh slate floor has over 800 raf badges thr are plaques of personell that won the vc and gc thr are also books of rememberance for personell killed during ww2..and paintings ... the statue was under guard for a while after being a target for vandels it was smeared in red paint within 24 hrs of being unveiled ,and still is a target for graffiti , after some opposition from germany and in some cases briton the bomber harris trust (raf vets) funded the statue .. the church was bombed by the germans and rebuilt/restored by the raf in 1958 .. the inscription on the statue reads ... the nation owes them an immense debt .... if anyones on a visit to london its worth an hr of your time Edited February 6, 2012 by the_stig Quote Link to post Share on other sites
