i was given this by my grandad over 40 years ago and it was old then, does anyone know anything about it. its only about an inch round.

Bet that could tell a few stories through the years Paulus, looks very old.

 

just a guess it looks like a old centre pin reel probablky for trout fishing? to be honest though mate there's far more people know what they're talking about than me on here

im not really fussed what its worth more about what it is being so small

I very much doubt the skill is still about to make something like that these days, lovely bit of history that mate, and of major sentimental value to you, that value means more than money. Never seen one that small before, small but perfectly formed.
