hernia's

Hiya, I was just talking to somebody about when we went to see the puppies and told them that one of the puppies had a 'nice' sized hernia on it's navel where the bitch had pulled a little when taking the cord off at birth.

Me and Matt did not know whether this would have caused problems whilst running later in life so we chose Meg, which is one of the best decisions we have made in a long time!!

Can anybody offer any advice about puppies with hernia's and their ability to work still.

Thank you.

alot of the time they just go back in and has no affect what so ever on there running and working abilty ...depending on the size of it most of the time they are ok ..if its a bitch you might have to have it operated on if you want to breed again thats depending on the size of it ..the vet will addvise you if you are thinking of breeding at a later date.......all the best snoop...

Mate had a pointer that had a huge umbilical hernia.Vet told him to wait till the dog was 12 month's old before deciding on which course of action. The hernia dissapeared completely by itself, i think the vet quoted £50 for the operation if needed.hth,Bill

it helps if you massage the hernia every day for a few mins ive had a dog with one a few years ago thats the advice i got of a good dog man ...it went completely ....but like i said dont breed the dog if theres still a lump ..get it sorted .... :thumbs-up:

From what I've seen, hernias are often hereditary, and contrary to popular opinion, NOT caused by the bitch pulling on the umbilical cord: I've watched my bitches chomping away at the cords and even pulling the pups round to wards them by the cords and NEVER caused a hernia.

My vet told me that if the hernia is just fatty tissue protruding when the hole sealed there's not a problem: but if it is an 'open' hernia, where you can push what's sticking out back inside (gut tissue), then it needs to be sown up properly, especially in a bitch if you are going to breed from her.

this happend with all the pups from from my bull x bitch, the people i`ve kept in touch with that had the pups, their pups show no signs of the hernia and they are all working well.
