fieldsportsman 107 Posted January 29, 2012 Report Share Posted January 29, 2012 (edited) Invited forager down, of here, for a days ferreting on the 18000 acre estate where I work now the shooting season is coming to an end. Anyway, after a quick word with keeper we set of through the valley, this thing was christ knows how long, and earths....well ive never seen anything like it. Lovely earths fixed in the middle, and plenty of them. Anyway, we started on a 15 holer, as we saw a rabbit dive down a hole. by the looks of it, we thought there may of been a fair few down there, on went the nets and down with the pugs. After a long wait, we finally had a bolt, a nice big buck rabbit. We tried to let the ferrets hunt on, but they didnt seem interested. So we boxed them up and moved on. We walked to the end, and found a patch, where it was covred by thick clumps of grass, again, in the open but, but there were simply to many holes to either miss or cover. We chucked the pugs down, and waited in the hope of back netting. Anyway, after what seemed like an age, we had a bolt, after dispatching that we had another and another, and what seemed to go on for ever. Of course, as sods law would have it, rabbits bolted out of holes, and yep you guessed it, ran straight on to a different earth. We could of had some cracking runs with a dog, but foragers dog was out of action. Anyway we did a few like this, 4 in total and ended up with a bag of 18, of course, we had proberly another 18 that bolted out of holes that were not covred.
