Bit of a mooch this afternoon . . . .

Recommended Posts

I had planned to get out this morning and do a bit of bushing and have a bit of a general mooch about with the dog, as he hasn't been out much in the day for the last few days. However i ended up having a few jobs to do and had to go into town, so didnt manage to get out until about 2pm. Decided to go and check out a bit of woodland that borders some land i have permission on, and where i am not usually bothered. . . .

Wad a walk through the lanes then across some fields, into the woodland, with the dog working nicely ahead, after a while, he gave a mark on a little set on a banking, so i put a few nets down and got Bear out and sent him down, a couple of mins later out came bunny, to a net and so did hob.

We went on from there, over a stream, the dog put a few rabbit out of cover and lost them in the thick stuff, where they were going to ground in sets covered by thick bramble. Eventually the dog dissapeared, obviously on something. I followed his direction and eventually he appeared to my left, then turned and went back again, so i followed him to a set he had obviously run one into. I was just about to net up and stood on the warren, and bunny decided to bolt. The dog snapped him up, and that was that.

We went on a bit and got a third mark. As i was netting up, two fecking collies appeared from nowhere and came straight at the dog, obviously ready for a scrap, finn ran at the first one and knocked him down a bit, and then ran them off. It was all a bit wierd. He was dog coursing with obvious intent. Anyway, he came back. Ferret down, and rabbit bolts to the net, dog grabs it.

As i was taking the nets off, the dog froze and then suddenly lunged off into the cover at high speed. At first i was thinking the dogs were back, but it wasn't. He dissapeared into the green, and the sound of his crashing tailed off. So i packed up and had a walk. I wandered about the wood in circles, probably for a good 20 mins, maybe more, saw the odd wild / stray sheep (and at one point started to think the worst), and generally cursed the dog. If he runs something to ground he will often stay put, or something that is bigger, he wont give up and will keep hunting it on nose to ground until he loses it totally, catches it or puts it down a hole. He's like a fecking hound. b*****d thing

Just as i was starting to think of Plan B, i heard some noise off to my side, and went to investigate, to be met by a very excited hound, who jumped on me like an idiot, wagging tal like mad, and then took me to see what he had found / done . Round the corner he went and back down his hole  tail wagging in the air like a fool as he did his best patterdale impression. Two hole run through several yards apart, stinking of charlie, with a whippet trenching his way in.

It was getting dark, so we went home.

Weird stuff happens when you go into the woods

And i forgot my bloody camera!

KR - It seems that way mate, bloody things, just the typical collie bark but no bite this time luckily. Finn thinks he's the big man though, he will stand up to anything, apart from Johnnys old Bitch Gem.

JB - Aye i wish you were as well! Hope you feel better soon
