A boxing day mooch.

Recommended Posts

My plans for today kind of fell through, so i ended up having a bit of a lie in. However, you can't let Boxing Day pass without a bit of a hunt at least, so i decided to head out after lunch with the dog, and my old albino jill Ruby for a mooch about.

We had a good rake about some woodland, putting up a few pheasants, and scaring a few tree rats, but didn't come across any bunnies. On the way out of the woods however, the dog gave a good mark on a fairly long set, a long the boundry fence.

Netted up both sides, and left the dog covering the field side, while i took the woodland side. Down went the old jill, and it went quiet. The fenceline that the set was on was a scrubby kind of semi-hedge, with large clumps of bramble, and stunted thorn trees, so i couldnt really see most of the nets. As i had a wander a long, my side, i noticed what looked like an unetted hole! On closer inspection however, there was a peg, with taught string disappearing below ground, and after a bit of a reach, the rabbit was in the bag. The little bugger must have bolted into the net, then about turned and tried to go back down.

A bit of bumping the other end of the set, took both me and the dog up there, before the rabbit promptly bolted out of the other end, on my side. The net was a difficult one to get to, and in the back of my mind i thought the rabbit was going to make its escape, however out of the hole, flew the old jill, and promptly sank her teeth into the back of the netted rabbits neck. So that one wasn't going anywhere!

Nets off and we carried on having a good mooch about, through some more woodland, along a stream bed and finally into some paddocks. We didn't see much, but the dog had a good hunt about and enjoyed himself, and i always like seeing him work.

On the way back to the car, got another mark, along a fence / road hedge. Netted up both sides, of the small set, and left the dog in the field again, while i took the road. Down went the jill and out popped bunny, again on my side.

With the bunny dispatched and nets off, we made our way back to the car, and headed home for a brew  Not the biggest of bags, but a good mooch and stretch of the legs.

Rake about - aye mate, it's a wierd one - boxing day doesn't feel complete unless i've done or seen a bit of killing. Bit odd i guess, but there you go! I'm off out ferreting / mooching tomorrow, then out for on the shoot on wednesday, then up in England ferreting on Thursday. Probably ferreting / mooching friday as well, but i havnt planned that far ahead yet

The fecking dog is bothering me to go lamping now, but i've had a few pints so the wee bugger can sod off!
