been out with lurchers before but dont really no all there is too it my pup is 7 weeks old when is the best time to train?

when will he be ready?

how do i train? never owned a pup before he is a saluki collie x bull greyhound

oh and what is a bull greyhound is it a staffordsire bull terrier x grey hound sorry to sound clueless but it is my first dog and i do really want to get in to the game all by myself

well start training your pup around 8-9 months no sooner.. he will b ready to learn anything @ 9 months,,

start with teaseing him/her alittle with what ever furry shit u have(even better if its rabbit fur) with the scent and all!

Then he will get the neck of wantin 2 get that furry thing every time.

i started the basics much sooner than that with my pup, recall sit stay retreiving etc. all depends theres a few bull types that could be used sure someone will be along who knows much more than me who will tell you the way to go.

Hi Mick,there is a dvd out by Dave Slieght called Purdeys progress,it's about the

first year in the life of a lurcher pup It shows Dave training her it is well

worth a watch[if you have trouble getting it pm me].

 

Whatever you do don't wait untill your lurcher is 9 months old before you

start to train it Below is a couple of pics of my pup.

 

Amy at 7 weeks retrieving her dummy.

 

 

 

Jumping out of her run with a toy in her mouth 8 weeks.

 

 

 

Sit training 12 weeks.

 

 

 

Lie down training 12 weeks.

Lurcher-lass why would you tease a 9 month old pup with rabbit fur and encourage it to rag it? You will end with a dog that crunches rabbits the minute it gets its mouth around one!

Elstudro1986 get her retrieving things like toys or socks now and as she gets older to dummies and rabbits, to get her jumping put a small board on the ground so as she has to jump to get out of her run, build up the height as she grows in size and confidence, Oh and the most important bit is the recall, make sure she,ll come back to you when you call her and this will make retrieving training alot easier The bull x Greyhound you asked about is a pitbull x greyhound. Hope this makes sense I was like you not so long ago Oh and TOTE that pup looks what age is she now? What X is she?

If you wait until the pup is 8 months old you will have one hell of a job getting it to do anything you want! It would be a bit like not sending a kid to school until it is 14 years old!

Start off right away calling the pup by its name, making a big fuss of it whenever it comes to you.

 

Play with it as much as possible: let it know that biting your hand is not allowed: even in play; give a nasty growl and say 'No' if it bites and take your hand away and ignore the pup for a while.

 

Getting a pup to sit at this age is dead easy: every time you feed it hold the bowl above its head and say 'SIT', as you move the bowl forwards, away from you and over the pup's head it will automatically sit as it cannot stand and look above its head at the same time.

 

DON'T TEASE IT WITH FURRY THINGS! Totally unnecessary IMO: 99.99% of all dogs will chase furry things when they are running in front of them. You'd be better off socialising it and teaching it manners with other dogs, kids, bycyles etc.

 

Even better: buy/beg/borrow (from a library?!) a book on puppy training: it doesn't matter if its not a lurcher book: all pups learn in the same way. EVEN better: take it to training classes if it is your first dog: that way the instructors will train YOU to train the pup.

 

The best working dogs are properly trained and socialised.

 

If you just want an uncontrolable lunatic that tries to kill everything that moves and doesn't obey you: well, the answer is in the quoted section above!
