do dogs get jealous?

Recommended Posts

The other night my bitch was taken out and had been to ground she was out for 5 hours, when she came in her kennel mate went mental, at first she was sniffing all around her and then attacked her. Since that night they have all been very temperamental. The terrierman said he recons that they were jealous of her. I didnt think dogs had emotions like that, he said he had not experienced anything like it in all his years working terriers. Has anyone else experienced this?

Any sensible thoughts please to help avoid a situation in the future.

Don't know if you'd class it as the same sort of thing that humans know as jealousy, but some dogs don't take kindly to what they might see as an inferior pack member doing something they think they should be doing first and foremost. That's one way of looking at it if you believe in the pack mentality. Another way to look at it is that the dog left in the kennel was releasing it's pent up drive at the other dog when it scented quarry on it after being locked alone in the kennel while the other one was out working. :hmm:

It's all theory on my part though because I've never experienced it myself, but if it starts to become a regular occurrence maybe you could wash the worked dog down to remove as much scent as you can before you put it back in the kennel, or maybe take the kennel'd dog out when you get back and give it something to rag on to release any pent up drive before you put them both back in together?

Been happening to me regular now. Taking the pups in turn with one of the older dogs picking up. When i get home and let the others out for a quick walk and feed, the 2 pups have a bit growl and jump at each other. They are kenneled together and share a bed and have no problems at any other time. Wether its a jealousy thing or a pack dominance thing it happens.

Sounds like their trying to establish thier place in pack mate.

Yer right mate. The wee dog i have wants to be the boss over the rest and i think he is stamping his authority. He is a wee bit of a b*****d at growling at other dogs i've noticed at shoots when they are in the back of a motor toghther. I doubt it mate some dogs are just more dominate then others, my dog's tried to test on more then one occasian but he now knows his place and is ALOT happy because of it.
