a very very sad time but poem says it all

The Aberfan disaster was a disaster indeed,

144 lives were lost and all because of greed,

116 children – dead, their parents devastated,

Mourning their lost offspring, whose lives they dearly rated.

Sitting in a classroom, learning ’cos they must,

What good will that knowledge be, under the coal-dust?

Yes, the Aberfan disaster was a disaster indeed,

144 lives were lost and all because of greed.

21st October, 1966,

The day that quiet school became a coal-black mix,

At Pantglas Junior School, people searched for friends

Even those who knew none present, a hand they too would lend.

People digging out their cares,

People whispering desperate prayers,

People wishing, hoping, imploring…

…People sobbing, weeping, mourning.

So what exactly happened, in that tiny town?

What caused sadness and sympathy all around?

If you’re sure you want to hear, then I will tell you now.

Many people died that day, and I’ll reveal to you how.

Pantglas Junior School was built on a mountain slope,

Above them was a slag heap, so you see they had no hope

When it rained for two days solid, making the pile weak,

Dynamite shook the mountain, and the future became bleak.

Down the thing cascaded on the unsuspecting school,

As they finished singing ‘All things bright and beautiful’

Oh, the Aberfan disaster was a disaster indeed,

144 lives were lost and all because of greed.

If only the coal company had parted with money,

Then maybe that day would have been a tad more sunny,

For you see this disaster could have been prevented,

If it had they wouldn’t have to have repented.

A stronger structure, a smaller pile, oh such a number of ways

That the disaster could’ve been at the very least delayed

But the Aberfan disaster was a disaster indeed,

144 lives were lost, and all because of greed.

So let’s remember their suffering and remember their pain,

So that 144 people did not die in vain.

Let’s not build on mountains, let’s protect against the rain,

So the Aberfan disaster doesn’t happen again.
