Oh yes and its a Acer 5532 and i'm on Windows 7......... .(if that makes any sense) That would suggest the signal strength of you wifi connection is weak. I remember on your dimmer switch thread that you said you lived in an old house. Would this house have very thick walls? Microwaves, tv's and l think fluorescent lights can interfere with a wifi's signal strength. But if you are sitting close to the router then one of the things l would suggest is if the router has aerials sticking out of it check that it hasn't been knocked or if it is the screw-able type that it is still screwed tight into the router. cheers Callum

So for a minute there i lost the signal again and the laptop was doing that 'searching' thing again until i went over and moved the router. I have a funny feeling the cat might have bit the cable and its effecting the output.? Why would my phone work and not the laptop though?....
Malt 379
Just a thought Lab, have you tried rebooting your router & your laptop? Turn all your wifi compatible equipment off (phone & laptop, & properly close them down, not put them into standby) then unplug your router and leave it for 30 seconds. Plug it back in, then when the lights on it show that it's ready, turn your other equipment back on one at a time. Worth a try.

Malt 379
Ctrl, alt & delete - bring up task manager and see what programs you have running in the background. Sounds like there's an application running which is preventing your laptop from closing down. Try to manually end it, and if it don't work, click on the 'processes' tab in task manager and see if you can find & end the one involved..

Is it the power cable you are saying the cat chewed or an RJ45 cable (commonly used to connect computers to routers by cable). I can't help but think if the cat had chewed through the power cable of your router that that would equal one dead cat unless of course you switch your router off? cheers Callum

Thats not a bad boot up time. My old mans comp was taking just over 5 mins before you could do anything with it from bootup before l added an extra 2 gb memory and reinstalled windows on it. Now its faster than it was when he first got it! cheers Callum
