LAZYBSTARD 225
Who did he wait for? There was no one to fight at Super Middle bar Sven Ottke and he didn't want to know unless the fight was completely on his terms. Hopkins was at Middle and done nothing but mess about in negotiations, and to be fair looking at how Hopkins performed after he fought Joe I think it's unfair to say he was washed up when Joe beat him. Roy Jones was content at Light Heavy beating nobodies and didn't really think Calzaghe would make for a big fight in the USA. I used to say the same thing your saying mate.....till a few years back when it was pointed out to me Calzaghes actual fight record.....it astounded me so much i wrote it down ! These are all of the " notable " opponents he boxed. Roy Jones aged 39 Bernard Hopkins aged 43 Byron Mitchell aged 30 Charles Brewer aged 33 Richie Woodhall aged 33 ( last fight of his career ) Chris Eubank aged 32 ( second last fight of his career ) Those are the " big name " fighters he fought..... Then you have defenses against unheard of fighters on a world scale such as.... Evans Ashira aged 36 Mario Veit aged 32 Omar Sheika ( 30/11 record...Journeyman at best ) Branko Sobot (19/11 record ) and plenty more of the same...............Lacey was probably Calzaghes best ever win and he has been proven not to be quite the fighter we all thought he was....id go as far as to say Kessler was his only true genuine title defense..........As fans of boxing its a crying shame we never got to see just how good Calzaghe really was. break it down as much as you like gnasher joe has a record second to none at the end of his career nobody wanted to fight him an early on in this topic you said age dosnt realy matter when i said collins was three years older than eubanks after you said eubanks was washed up so i think joe calzaghe stands head an shoulder above any british boxer ever one fight calzaghe turned down more than once --- carl froch ... maybe the money wasnt right i dont think froch is anywhere near as good as joe was

gnasher16 31,602
one fight calzaghe turned down more than once --- carl froch ... Absolutely..............and to tell one of the biggest names in the sport Bernard Hopkins if he wants to fight he has to go to little old Wales rather than have it take place in the boxing capital of the world...........only to years later go to the boxing capital of the world anyway to fight the very same man now aged 43....dont fool anyone..
