thursodog 353
Hi folks, Decided to do one last tweak to my HW80 and added a top hat to complete my fac tune. Its got a bushnell legend 5-15x40 scope on it. Spent all day Sunday practicing with various types of pellets at different ranges. Can't get any N&N field trophy .22 up here of the shelf so started with RWS Superdome, put a whole tin through the gun during the day, hopeless in this gun along with Rabbit magnums, prometheus, any pointed pellets and thunderbolt hunting pellets. None of them grouped even at close range. RWS hollow points on the other hand are producing cloverleafs out to 35 yards without any trouble with only the very occassional flyer/pilot error. So decided to have a wander round my permission and only saw 2 rabbits and nailed both of them 1 at 30 and the other at 35 yards. Loving the HW and can't wait to get my hands on the H&Ns to see if they'll group as well and out to greater ranges. All the best Chris. Quote Link to post
andyfr1968 772
Glad you're getting out and about with it, Chris I had an quite some time ago and that also grouped well with RWS H Points. They're pretty much the only odd shaped pellet that I've ever found that can hold a decent group at distance if the gun likes them. Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
Had several 80's. I've shot hundreds upon hundreds of quarry with Superdomes. Maybe the gun is too powerful to get get good groups. I also used field target trophy to good results. I think too many lads have this obsession with power, well, once upon a time i had a 77 and that 77 was about as lethal a gun as you could get. I whacked everything including its fair share of hares, ducks and had rabbits out to over 70 yards through the head. It was as sweet as a nut straight out of the box and those 'domes flew sweeter than a teenagers kiss. Then one day i got it chrono'd, and it was doing 10ft/lb. So, maybe theres a lesson there? Just a thought/....JD Quote Link to post
andyfr1968 772
Spot on, JD. My 90 'only' makes around 10 and I've no problems with it at all Quote Link to post

Airgun hunting is all about trying to get close and putting the pellet it accurately. Sure, you're limited, restricted even, but the legal limit, but that's what makes it so bloody great. But it's each to their own.... Quote Link to post

On an estate I help out on I tried to get a large wood passed for RF which had a footpath running along one side. The FAO came and had a look but wasn't happy about RF but he did OK it for FAC air. I totally agree tough that if it's a viable option, RF's the way to go for stretching it out a good bit more. When funds allow, an HMR will be on my shopping list. Quote Link to post
thursodog 353
Hey guys, I'm not really after alot of power as i have an lr and an hmr but i just felt it would be good to have the put out around the 20 ft/lbs it was designed for and also i managed to smooth out the firing cycle to a nice pulse that i enjoy using. Its making between 18 to 20 pounds so not exactly blasting them out. I'll keep trying out different pellets and see what outcome i get. Cheers Chris. Quote Link to post
