Old dog, New tricks?

Recommended Posts

Just wondered how many of us believe in the saying "can't teach a old dog new tricks"

Heard so many different views on this, and I'm really intrigued to how many of us actually believe a older dog can't be brought on..

I've never tried or seen anyone with a old dog that don't or won't work so I dont really have an opinion on this one. ATB HD.

Our Lurchers are so versitile and adapt so well to new challenges, thats why we love 'em. I've brought on a fair few older dogs in my time, most picked up just about any form of both training and hunting.

With the exception of two collie crosses (at different times and I ain't knocking the breed) who, once wed to their own type of hunting I could not change. One was a bitch that had predominantly done daytime work and hunted up, doing the same constantly on the lamp and the other was a bitch that would be fine around ferrets at home but would nail them (and anything else!) in the field. I put a lot of thought time and effort into both and changed very little. ;)

with older dogs , you prob can teach few new things, but any (bad) habits will (stay) there .With colliex thing, you right mate, they are to robtic in there ways. The mind set of this type of x , is not always a good thing in a lurcher. They will only do what they want to do fact, where as a bullx or lurcher to lurcher bred dog, as a just strong mind set, but will give more and (not) just for it self .

Got a oldish bitch(7)here who'd never seen a ferret or been exposed to ferreting until she was 6 but to see her out on a days ferreting you'd think she'd been doing it all her life.

I personally think its down to the individual dog regardless of how they bred, some can be learnt new tricks some can't imo.
