went out today with my 5 month old lurcher,its a pit/greyhound/collie/g.houndXwhippet/g.hound.I had to drive 34 miles to get to a farm that has 1oo's of lambing ewes.I'm friends with the farmer and called to him,he said work away and have fun.Well my sole purpose going there was to get up close and personal with the ewes and lambs.I entered the fields and walked amongst the stock with the pup on the lead first off.I have to say he almost shit himself when we were surrounded by sheep.After a few minutes I was confident enough to let him loose and he never left my side,(told ya he was shitting himself).I approached a lamb lying on his own and picked him up,the dog had a good sniff at him and then ignored him after that.This wee lamb followed us about and every time I got the pup to sit and stay the lamb snuggled up close to the dog who didnt know what to make of it.I spent an hour and a half sitting,walking and generally petting the cute little lambys.The pup took no notice whatsoever after a short time.I'm heading back again Monday to repeat the exercise and be certain in the future that the dog will look on the sheep as a nuisance rather than an object to attack.I have to admit there was a certain FEEL GOOD factor there today,I left the field with a big grin on my face,partly because the dog worked a treat and the lambs were so co-operative.The farmer even commented that I must have enjoyed the experience.I was expecting it to be a chore but it turned out to be a simple exercise.

oh i wish life was so simple here ,my whippet is now 9 months so i thought it was time to run her free the

first couple of days was ok , then she ran with the sheep !!!!!!!!!!!!!next day she met a colt who wanted to play actually came up to her ,next thing i knew she was nipping his side ;ll then she was hanging of his tail needlees to say she got booted she froze , i was having nightmares over broken legs !!!!so im just waiting for a nasty yew now when they start lambing

I must get mine amongst sheep too. She has been around cows, terrofied of them, just got to get the sheep sorted out.

took mine for a walk yesterday and she got into the sheep field went to chase them but came back when i called her not to bad as she,s not been that close to them before a little more education is needed and she'll be fine :thumbs-up:

Drove close to 30 miles to a hill with plenty of ewes and lambs.Just as I got there we had typical summer like weather,PISSING RAIN and SLEET showers.As I had my 11 year old son with me I decided to head back towards home.The winds were gusting and the sleet was coming down heavy.Well we travelled in about 10 miles and the sun came out so I went to another spot and we went for a walk about.Through the sheep and young uns and we were walking down by a lake and found 3 active dens,feathers of hens,pigeon and pheasant all about,plus rabbit carcasses,so mental note made for next September.I would assume cubs are within these dens.The 3 dens are within a half mile of each other.I was pleased with the pup,I didnt pay any attention to him and he strolled through the flock without a sideward glance at leisure,no leash on him either.i have a 16 year old son that I'm considering selling into white slavery as hes a lazy bo**ix,I have photos in my camera of the sessions out but he wont plant them in the puter no matter how much I ask him.Any offers may be forwarded to me post haste as I dont want his mother finding out I'm selling him,by the way hes not much good for anything at the moment,hes a stroppy little s**t,eats for Ireland and answers back when spoken to.LOL

Well one jigsaw early learning is a lot easier,and if it goes tits up the dog wont to much damage,communication with the farmer is essential as he can see how responsible you are and again if anything went wrong as his advice he has probably broken loads.I have started taking mine to our lambing shed every night she is not that bothered,when a dog sees a sheep or lamb for the first time sometimes it frightens the shits out of both of them and the sheep if out in a field will turn and run dog will then naturally chase.Thats when your problems start.

YIPDEFU***NDO it worked,my heart was in my mouth doing that.I think I deserve a beer after that.If it hadnt worked I'd have had a beer to drown my sorrows,(its an Irish thing,kind of a custom like)either way I'm getting beer As you can see from the photos hes steady eddie with those sheepy things.I have to admit hes a pleasure to have.I look at all the pups born and dogs with their photos on here but (and I know this is going to sound jammy)I wouldnt swap him for anything else.I think he'll develope into a useful dog for me.I'm not looking for a world beater,once he is steady and obedient and trys his best he'll suit me fine.I have to get him used to the nets next so that should be fun.The one thing I noticed about him is he seems to understand what I expect of him after only a few outings.I may end up eating my words but that'll be my fault if it happens not his.
