simonrocco 175 Posted September 7, 2011 Report Share Posted September 7, 2011 i desided to have a trip out with the dogs and ferret for a few hours this afternoon i drove to a little wooded area a few miles from my house it normally holds a few rabbits before i got to the woodeed area theres a 5 hole set on a dyke which looked pretty clean so i desided to net it up i collared the jill up and entered her (its her first season with me and shes turning out to be a good little worker) i stood back and waited it wasnt long before i heard bumping and a few seconds later a rabbit bolts with the jill right behind it my lurcher picked the rabbit up in the net i got it off the dog and replaced the net and then entered the jill again she went back in and worked the rest of the set but nothing more at home so i put the jill back in the box and took the nets off and moved to the wooded area i tried 3 or 4 more sets but there was nothing at home i found a 2 holer which i have never noticed before so i put the nets on and entered the jill and stood back and kept hold of my lurcher it was a good job i did keep hold of him as 6 baby rabbits bolted out of one of the holes i couldnt belive it i thought all the baby rabbits had grown up in that area as i have just had adults from there on previous trips i got the jill out and desided to stop ferreting as i didnt want to kill any babys so i desided to ratch a few dykes out with my terrier there wasnt much about but on the way back to the car my terrier put a big rabbit out of the dyke my lurcher seen it and gave chace it wasnt much of a run as the rabbit turned round and went back into the dyke my terrier bolted it again but this time out the other side of the dyke and my lurcher couldnt get through as it was to thick so ended up with just the one rabbit but it was a good few hours out i enjoyed it i didnt take the camera as it needs new batterys in it but heres a couple of pics of the first set i did from a previous outing. hope you like the write up atb Quote Link to post

Would save you some hassle mate. hello pal iv got a bull x lurcher hes a 5/8ths 3/8ths cross hes a well behaved and obediant but he dosent mark my terrier is still young at the min and this will be his first season ferreting so im hoping to get him marking soon he is a cross between a parson russel and a patterdale both of which i own heres a couple of pics of the lurcher and terrier i used today. I would be fairly sure that by the end of the season, if you work at it a bit, the terrier will start marking, it's pretty natural to them, and once he does, you will have much more efficient days! I would be fairly sure that by the end of the season, if you work at it a bit, the terrier will start marking, it's pretty natural to them, and once he does, you will have much more efficient days! i have got the use of my mates spannial for marking but cant lend it all the time my patterdale marks them in but it cant be trusted around ferrets so i dont take them out together. im sure once hes had a bit more work hell start to mark them in. You can leave the lurcher loose around the holes for any escapees. thanks pal i know what your saying but i prefer to take my terrier with me thats ok with the ferrets than my patterdale which is'nt then theres no accidents i have tied the patterdale up before but he managed to chew through the lead and got off luckly the ferret was still below ground so i just leave him at home now.
