rob190364 2,594
Has anyone ever had either themselves or their dog injured by a fen trap, or any other type of trap or snare? I took the dog and ferret out for a couple of hours last night and as I was walking back alongside a woodland in the fading light I noticed a couple of fox dens and it just occurred to me that if someone had set a trap we wouldn't have even known about it until it was too late. Don't suppose there's a lot you can do about it apart from walk the route in the daytime to check but even then you're not going to be able to check everywhere the dog might go.....I guess it's one of the risks of the sport? Just wondered if it had ever happened to anyone on here?
scothunter 12,609
no mate and any one setting a fen in a fox den would be an idiot.i know where your coming from though.years ago i set fens in rabbit burrows.however it was burrows in the middle of no where.and back then, not many people wandered that far.today i wouldnt consider it.far to many dog walkers now and they seem to turn up in the remotest of places.if it ever happened to my dog,i would be casmping out waiting on him returning for his fen,and would proceed to beat the c**t over the head with it lol

You would have to be an idiot to set one where people might be walking, problem is there's plenty of idiots out there!
The one 8,628
Same here i set my fen's out the road but i still lost two doing a big sandy burrow i reckon a fox had a couple of free dinners of me and they might be at the den?.
scothunter 12,609
seen a few tunnel traps, set with a fen in it,along the sides of dry stone dykes.which is prob safer in this day and age.
Ideation 8,217
Meant to be set in tunnels, and if set in warrens i prefer to stick a couple of sticks in to narrow the entrance (if it's wide) to stop any dog or anything getting it's head in. Issue is probably more, snares set by idiots in cover or in hedges, and your dog hitting one while out of sight and choking before you got to it. As scott said, i'd be waiting and hanging the c**t by their own snare.
