Showed Mattydski and his brother in law a few of the traditional hotspots around the old home town last night. They turned out to be more not spots than hotspots in the end, the action was terrible. :( I traditionally like a bit of a rough sea for fishing over sand, and last night the sea was a calm as anything, so I suppose we can use the conditions as some sort of mitigation.. :whistling::rolleyes::laugh:

Lack of effort or choice of tactics wasn't the problem, as we used numerous rigs and fished 3 different locations as the tide changed state. We started of on the pier in Tenby at high tide. The most excitement we had was when we had a bite on a float fished strip of mackerel. The rest of the time our baits (rag/mackerel) were being stripped by crabs like no ones business!

As the tide went down, we moved round to the other side of Castle Hill to a spot known locally as The barrel post. The state of the place was shocking. It was littered with discarded tackle packets, empty tins of beer & used condoms & their wrappers. :bad:

The crab feeding session continued at the same sort of pace as we left it at the harbour, and we briefly got our own back as Mattyd's BIL landed a very tangled up spider crab!

Time was ticking away, and still we blanked for a few hours until I landed the first fish of the day: a small red gurnard which briefly doubled as a flying fish on it's way back to the water after I spiked myself several times on it.. :icon_redface: :dunce:

Nothing else was forthcoming, so as the tide dropped further we went down onto the castle beach. My favourite spot was already taken, so we set up a bit further away from the tidal island on it and cast out. We then came up against a new enemy - weed.. :( Time and again promising looking quivers of the rod tips turned out to be nothing more than a bunch of tangled seaweed drifting against the lines. We perceived, and as the tide was approaching it's lowest phase, I hit into my second fish of the night: a small dogfish, which proceeded to piss over Mattyd's hand as he held it for the picture!

The heads were going down as Matty's BIL caught the third and final fish: another small dogfish.

Tired after fishing the tide from high to low & running out of bait, we headed for the hills.

Despite the severe lack of action, the company really made up for things & I really enjoyed the session. If I was fishing solo, I'd have given up long before we did, but for once the lack of fish didn't seem to matter quite so much.

I used to fish Tenby a lot a few years ago, did well for mullet. What i used was 1oz lead hard on the bottom, 24/36" bottom to 3 way swivel, size 8 freshwater hook on a 12" snood, chunks of mackeral about the size of sweetcorn... place i fished was just along the path under the castle,, where the steps are,,, fished that rig hard againds the rocks, from mid tide up,, but on night tides.. another good spot was Giltar point, float fish sand eel on a long trace seemed to find a bass or 3 when the tide is running hard.

You'd have a shock if you fished there now mate, I grew up there & was right into my fishing. These days even a dogfish is a rarity instead of the nuisance they always used to be in the past. It's gone to pot, big style. :(

My brother had a nice three pounder (bass) from Giltar a few weeks back on a nice soft back crab he found there fishing at low water. That's about the only one he's caught this year apart from schoolies.
