Update on Pup

Following on from my last post (above) regarding this young bitch I thought I'd give a bit of an update.

Following a request from the farmer on one of my permissions Me and my young son headed out with the lamp last night with the two dogs and following what happened back in February I must say I was somewhat a little nervous. After the setback in February, the little black bitch was left in the kennel when there was any hunting to be done and I went back to basics regarding her basic obedience and retrieving.

Having parked in the yard we set out for the fields with the dogs on slip, after a short walk and going through what sounded like the most noisiest gate in the countryside we were on the field ready to go.

We decided to let the dog have the first run and with a rabbit sat in the middle of the beam the dog was off and managed to secure the first catch of the night. It was far from ideal conditions so any catch was a bonus and I was really pleased as the older dog is only 17 months.

After a quick scan of the field we moved on to the next and were welcomed by the sight of a good number of rabbits, so it was the moment I had been dreading time for the young bitch to have a run on her first rabbit since February, I selected a rabbit that was a good distance from the hedge and sitting tight and walked as close as I could, We managed to get about 5 yards away before the rabbit made its move, the young lad slipped the pup and she was in hot pursuit and stayed tight to the prey before it made its escape through the hedge, no matter I was more concerned with what she would do next but I neednt of worried she returned immediately to be put back on slip.

Several runs followed but no additions to the bag but things were going well with both the young dogs. Another rabbit was spotted and time for the bitch to have another go, after being slipped she headed down the beam and just as she was approaching the target another three rabbits got up and took off in different directions to my surprise she stuck with the one being lamped and after several turns we heard that squeal that indicated she had caught her rabbit, immediately both me and my son were filled with dread ,what was she going to do ( her last catch in February was tossed around and eventually eaten), what happened next made all those moments of dread and times of feeling like tearing my hair out, float away , as she held her catch high and trotted proud as punch and delivered her prize straight to the awaiting hand of my lad EUREKA!!!!

We finished with just the two rabbits and we on the fields for just under an hour but it ranks as one of my all time highs as a lurcher owner. What a difference 6 months can make and I can honestly say both dogs never put a foot wrong :boogy: :boogy:
