Sweeney-Todd 208
Hi All. Well after ordering two SEs, one each for me and my mate, one has turned up. First impressions were very good, nice comfortable rifle to shoulder, the new Menelli stock looks the part and is well finnished, a bit to well really, as when the face gets a bit wet or sweaty, your cheek tends to slide on it. First job was to pull the barrel through using a patch dampened with white spirit, the first pull through produced quite a dirty sample. Pulled through with clean patch until dry. Fitted the Twink to her ( Thank you Darryl ) I filled the rifle to just under 230 Bar ( the guage on the SE is a real bonus ) and went into the garden with the chrono attatached. I realise that this excersize served only one purpose at this stage, and that was to see if the rifle was legal, which it was at 10.84 ftlb using JSB Exacts .22 15.9 grn. I have found at the moment, the rifle performs more consistantly by only filling to 200 Bar. Returning about 55/ 60 good shots, before dropping away at just under the 100 Bar. Have put about 500 pellets through her up till now, and all seems to be working very well. The rifle is producing some impressive results straight out of the box. Went to my friends range today and had a real blast plinking, and zeroing the SE, also cutting 2 inch slices off a couple of marrows he hung up, great fun!! Zeroed back to 55yds at the moment, and very happy with the results. We are off out for a mooch tomorrow, and will hopefully give the SE her first kill. So far, very, very, pleased with the rifle, this could be a big seller for BSA I think. ATB. Bill. Quote Link to post
zini 1,939
Hi Bill, I also have a brand new .177 BSA Scorpion SE and have had the same thing happen with mine in regards to a dirty barrel at the start. I found the barrel to be really dirty and full of grey dirt. I first thought it was lead and that the gunsmith had been using it as a demo rifle in the shop, but now think that it could be just down to manufacture as the rifle was in the box when he bought it down to me. I made a school boy error with mine though and shot about 40 pellets through the barrel without cleaning it thinking that it was new and clean like my r10 was when I first bought her some years back. I then tried to zero mine to find it grouping tight with maybe 4 shots and then the next 1 or 2 shots from 1 to 4 inches somewhere else on the target. I thought that the rifle was broken at first or the silencer was clipping until me and Andy checked it on Andy’s Scan chrono to find over 20 shots it was doing 11.3 ft / lbs and only had a 7fps variation and was very consistent with AA fields (.177) due to the rifles new self regulating valve system on the rifle. After removing the silencer I was still having the same problem in regards to accuracy though until Davy suggested have you tried cleaning the barrel. We pulled the barrel through and I was shocked. Tonnes of dirt in fact it needed about 5 pull throughs with Davys pull through to clean it properly. Once cleaned though it was spot on and hitting 5p size targets at 50 metres and beyond. Since the clean the rifle has now accounted for vermin at 64 metres (witnessed), 52 metres and 48 metres with no problem and is hitting clover leave groups at 30 metres easily. In summary they are very consistent and accurate rifles that put the pellet where you want it with ease. I too think that this rifle will become a massive seller for BSA and be a firm favourite for a lot of PCP shooters in the future. ATB Si. Quote Link to post
secretagentmole 1,701
Mrs Mole has one of these little beasties in .177 and is very impressed with it as well, hers was grouping OK from the off, but I might just give that barrel a clean to see if it can be made any better! Lovely gun to hold and fire, The bolt action on the back being very reminiscent of a Daystate or R10! I will try the filling to 200 bar trick and will keep you all informed, when Mary can shoot again as she has just had her wrist operated on again (second time, they cocked it up the first)... Sweeney-Todd 208
Hi Si. Got to say I had the same thoughts as you when I saw the state of the cleaning patch, I thought the rifle had been used , so hearing from you that you had the same result is reasurring. I know they oil the barrels for storage purposes, but I reckon they must have used old sump oil Sounds like you have yours shooting nicely, some good ranges shot there. I have only put about 500 or so pellets through her at the moment, Ill give her another 500 and chrono again properly. Made the mistake of not cocking the rifle fully, and double loaded it, but she spat them out no problem. Dont know about you, but I find the bolt to be under a fair bit of tention at the moment, compared to my mates R10 bolt ?? Off out with her today with Rich, so hope to bag one or two, and get her christened ATB. Bill. Quote Link to post

secretagentmole 1,701
I fear for my life Bill, also I have the wonderful Mini-Me Super 10, that is a superb performer and deadly accurate, even in the hands of a Mole! I have had several rabbits now at 60 metres, at the start of the year I though 30 metres was a long shot, now 60 metres, my how times change! Quote Link to post
Sweeney-Todd 208
Hi Mike. Sounds like your getting the hang of it ......60 + Mtrs is good shooting and the S10 is just the rifle to do it with, lovely rifle. Im fast becomming a BSA convert.....you cant beat thier barrels I dont think ( Personel oppinion ) and the bolt action is solidly built. ATB. Bill. Quote Link to post
secretagentmole 1,701
I just prefer the Super 10, and seeing as mine is under a month old and performing flawlessly I have to agree with you, I just love the side bolt action of the Super 10. I am a super 10 kind of shooter I guess, both the pcp rifles I have are Super 10s. The Scorpion is a lovely gun though, the SE has that beautiful stock, a great piece of design and is a decent rifle, just wish Mary was well enough to shoot hers, we have our go anywhere mobile and with the .177 we should be chasing pigeons all over the place!
