Oh what a day!

Recommended Posts

Well it was a nice day so I decided to go down the permission as I had not been down for a few days and they will forget about me. So I was dropped off at the top of the track as usual, walked down and saw a couple of large rabbits, grazing at the track edges, so put the bags down, got the rifle out and attached the bipod, I managed to stalk up to 35 metres from the first before they started to get nervous so I managed to get into a prone position and got a good aim on the nearest one, fired, rabbit rollover! Nice 3lb ish rabbit in the bag. The other gave it heels into the brambles. Put the bags under the tree, along with the rabbit under a bag to keep things with wings from it. I had pre warned the police to let them know I was down there. Got a kit further up the track so 1 for me, 1 for the dogs.

I decided to go down the track and head back to the top and go in the fallow field where the remains of the barns are (the area I call the brickyard). I saw a woman on the phone looking up the road and thought no more about it. Nothing in the brickyard so back down the track, along to the plum trees where I saw a shotgun cartridge. Problem was this had not been fired and I think kids go down there to pinch the plums! Pick it up and call the control room who tell me to hand it into the nearest police station, I ask them when they close and they inform me 7pm! Brilliant, when I am due to be picked up! Oh gonads!!!

Then the phone rings, it is the police station at Downham Market, they ask if I can be seen from a house across the road from my permission, I tell them yes, they said, "Ah thought it was you just a woman reported seeing a man in camouflage holding a gun!" so I assured them that I was not shooting at passing cars, horses etc and that I did have permission, "No problem", then I explained about the S&J 28 gram cartridge I had found, where I found it and could they help. They informed me a car was on it's way in case it was not me that was seen.

I explained I would get myself down the track and would give the officer in the car the cartridge as I had no license to hold it and I thought it would be dangerous to leave it in situ, all it needs it one inquisitive kid or a heavy footed horse or a kid dropping a bike hard on it and chaos and injury could ensue. They said fine, hand it over by all means, thanks for retrieving it! Police officer pulls up and says hello are you Mike, I explain I am and here have a present! He was happy to retrieve it and dispose of it, he had a quick look at the BSA and said nice rifle, passed the time of day for a few minutes. He thanked me for phoning in my location and getting a reference number and please keep doing so!

Then I heard voices, coming from the garden of the house that had reported me. So I removed the magazine, hid the rifle and hoofed it across the road. I made myself know to the lady ho had reported me and explained what I was doing. I assured her I was not shooting at cars, houses, kids etc. She explained she was worried as it was the first time she had seen anyone shooting there (I told you those NBC suits were good). I assured her that it actually helped a lot, explained where the plums were, the kids were fizzing like shaken up bottles of pop. We had a good laugh and I reassured her that there was no problem and I would do the same thing given her situation and that I had already told the police so no harm done. She thanked me, I thanked her and went back to the gun. A couple of hours later I saw them driving off, the kids shouted hello to me through the car windows. I waved and shouted hello back, probably scared a few rabbits but I think the kids liked seeing an animated action man! Walking back I saw a flash of ginger in the nettles. I raised the gun, but it did not move like a rabbit so I advanced slowly, a dirty great ginger tom shot out. I had encountered this cat before as it tried to remove one of my kills a few weeks ago. Think it had a nasty surprise...

Walked back through the permission and saw the permission holder loading straw bales, so I got over to him and explained about Bun Hers chariot (the 4x4), he said no problem, explained how to get through so we can get the 4x4 down the bottom of his land and basically have fun! He was a tad cheesed off as he had driven a heavy forklift over his smart phone earlier... Coming back round I got a kit in the brickyard and got behind a rabbit in the bottom paddock. 2 for the pot and 2 for the dogs...

Well time passed and I can hear the damned pigeons, but the trees are so thick you cannot see them. I walked back down the track and I got a line on another rabbit grazing in the paddock. Fired and another rabbit down, that one was cleaned and gifted to an old lady just down the road who loves rabbit! Well she can have plenty more! Anyway below is the photo of a somewhat eventful day....
