Kye 77
Me and FR got out today...great day to be out...we have had lots of snow, and it was past waist deep in some spots, on FR anyway (i was up to me nose!..lol.) We had three dogs out today, Agro my choc dog, Blanc, FR's black bitch, and Lizzie, my wifes Russell....we tried Lizzie first, and after finding no coons in the hay loft, she managed to bolt a cat from a load of round bales...not great but better than nothing!..lol. We then put her away, and collared up Agro and Blanc...this is a fairly new spot we have got, so we decided to have a scrat about, and see what earths we could find...we walked about 2 miles in some deep snow, but found nothing but coyote tracks....we did find a pipe that stank to high heaven of fox though. We had dug to Agro (the "Anchor"..lol.) at a spot at the front of the property two weeks ago, and got a good reslut to a coon, so we were not exspecting to find anyone home to be honest, but you cant right rules about animals. Blanc wasnt realy fit for a dig, she has been other wise occupied latley with other chores, she was more out for a good leg stretch, and to have a run around...neither me or FR likes to work a dog unfit, so Blanc gave us a dirty look!...sorry girl. Agro showed some interest, and although he 'aint the smartest, he 'aint a liar...there was clearly some living thing with fur inside this earth... Its a two holer, one entrance is decent, the other is fecking tiny...of course, he didnt want in the big hole...oh no, that would be TO easy!...lol. What makes me laugh is when you hear people over here say how the Bellman and Flint is to BIG for the earths here, let me tell you summat, this dog is big...he is 16" and 20+lbs....he had to "Super-Man" it all the way up to his quarry, and he was jammed in there tight, and i mean tight...if i had left his coat long, he wouldnt have fit, thats how tight it was....its an old Ground Hog earth. So, with our dog that was to big, our collar that was too big, and in ground that was frozen solid for about 14" we was in for a good time!..lol. The dog had squezzed in, oh so tight, and was baying in the tipe of voice that said "When i get my fat english chocolate arse up this pipe, your fecked!"....25 minutes later, Agro met an angry raccoon, and it was on like Donkey-Kong... This is were FR came into his own... ...being the big strapping lad that he is, he gave that ground what for...after making good progress, i wanted a go...show these yanks a thing or two eh!?..lol. I guess dropping from 215lb, to 173lbs is not going to be a good carrer choice in my bar-ing future...lucky for me, FR is a good bloke on the bar, and he got the job done...of course it would have taken him longer, but with me dabbing his brow, and cheering him on, he got the job done....no shit, it took about 1hr 30mins to get a few a poxy roots, and 14" of solid frozen ground...i have NEVER seen ground like it, concrete would have been a welcome replacement!... Agro had anchored this raccoon in fine style, and it wasnt going anywhere....you know when Agro is upto his quarry...because no matter how big the tube, how wide, half filled with water, or how big the quarry is, it gets anchored...he will not let quarry past him...and being a good size dog, there is no reason any game should move, mid-tube or not...alot of people dig coon with smaller, baying type dogs, and thats great...but if quarry that weighs 20lbs is being worked buy a 10lb dog, and that said quarry wants to move, it will...its a fact of life...a dog has to be big enough in body (and willing enough, but thats another story!..lol.) to hold game...either where it finds it, be it mid-tube, or stop end, or at the breakthrough...nothing worse than having a dog work hard enough to hold game, and then not be willing to hold game at the end of a dig...just to have it move to another part of the sette, or bolt over the dog to run across the fecking field!..lol. The farmer was happy, one less pesky varmint to shit all over his hay, and one more notch on our belt...that takes us upto 50 Raccoons for our first season in the new place...i dont know how many other critters we have accounted for, im sure FR will put it up (we record everything, just because we are that sad!.. ) that dont include with the sighthounds either. Plus on the way home, we managed to shout some encouragment to two cats in the car park, getting a little fruity... ...i was surprised the male cat could get such good 'thrust' because he was on atleast 3" of ice...fair play, i felt he made such a good effort, that it was worth a mention... ... I just wanna say thanks to FR, a great guy to get out with, a wizzard on the Bar, and his knowledge of Yank quarry is huge, and has helped me learn about the native flora and fauna...cheers mate. I would just like to say the dog took little to no punishment...just a little nick on the chin. Kye,.. PS...FR took a few pics on his camera phone so im sure he will stick 'em up when he gets a chance. Quote Link to post

Kye 77
Cheers lads...yeah, the weather can be bloody cold...its the wind that does it more than anything...our house was built in the 1940's, and its freezing in winter...hope to get some new windows one day. The Stags are good, but the bitch had a terrible season....she broke her tail and have to have it removed, then she got bitten buy a snake, and her foot swelled right up....then she broke her fecking neck!...she is ok now, but she has been outta action most of this season...we will get her out on some game before we call it quits...if the cold weather holds, we should be able to get a few more digs in, and when it warms up a little, we will get out on the lamp. Kye 77
Me and FR was talking about raccoons yesterday, and he jokingly said "If you crossed a Fox with a Badger, and added a little Monkey in the mix, you would get a Raccoon"...to be honest, thats just what there like..lol...they will use there IQ, teeth and all four feet/hands to work a dog...to break through to your dog and see him working his quarry, and then the Coon grab the dogs collar so it can pull into him is crazy...i have nothing but the upmost respect for them as a quarry, and they are great fighters...i realy admire them... All the best guys.. Kye,.. Royst, no joking, i will have that bitch if shes any good..have you dug to her? Quote Link to post
